    Hi There,

    I'm currently planning on buying a new(used) mountain bike from a fella in Quebec,Canada. Having thought that the import duty tax and VAT would have been too much I did some research and found that if the product was manafactured inside the EU then the taxes have already been payed and therefore will not be charged if I send it from the Canada. Could someone please help clear this up for me? I don't know wheather the tax will be charged or not?

    Hello Sullymtb,

    Just to clarify ;

    1) How do you know it was manufactured in the EU
    2) Where did you find that if it is manufactured in the EU and imported from Canada you are not liable for duty and VAT ?

    I believe you would a) need to proof that the bike was manufactured in the EU and b) proof it was exported from the EU to Canada.

    Not sure you would be able to satisfy Customs on both both points. In any event, you may be able to make a case about the duty if you can prove it was manufactured in the EU, however, you will be liable for VAT @ 21% over the cost of the bike (Customs may look for confirmation of the money you transferred) and the transport cost from Canada to Ireland.

    1) the company is called Lapierre and their bikes are hand built in France and have been since they began production. The information is availible on their website.

    2) "If the item you are buying is sourced within the EU, then you do not pay duty or VAT, as it will already have been paid. This does not apply to items like cigarettes and alcohol. Some European based sites ship from outside of the EU, so check before you buy. The Channel Islands (Jersey & Guernsey) are not in the EU." quoted from another thread on the forum.

    thanks for the help

    Hello Sullymtb,

    1) Ok, so the bike is originally manufactured in the EU. However, as far as Customs is concerned, unless you have proof of export from the EU to Canada (i.e. the export document presented at time of export and validated by the Customs in the port of export), where it was originally manufactured is of no concern, duty will be payable
    2) You are not buying from another EU members state, the goods are currently in Canada and therefore if (re) imported into the EU (e.g. Ireland) are subject to Duty and VAT.

    Can't see a way around it
