    Hi all,

I've booked flights from Dublin to Vienna in February for my girlfriend and I, and we're going to fly home from Bratislava. We have 2 nights in Vienna and a night in Bratislava.

Does anyone know how much a train is from Vienna to Bratislava, and whether there are different companies that provide the service? Or would a bus be a better idea?

Also, does anyone have any accommodation recommendations for either Vienna or Bratislava? Ideally, we'd like to stay in an apartment in Vienna and then quite a nice hotel in Bratislava. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

    Many thanks.

you can get a ferry from vienna to bratislava. Its a nice trip down the danube, and goes right into the heart of bratislava. takes about 2 hours i think.
Bratislava is a small place so the town /old town/ castles can be seen in a few hours.
You can take a trip up to the UFO bridge and have a meal. you wont miss it when you are in the city centre.
    Enjoy the cheap beer/food.

    Cheers corkthai.

That sounds good - I like the idea of the boat journey. I must look into it.

Ferry doesn't operate in February, it operates from April to October I think.

Thanks so much for that - it's extremely helpful.

It's a pity that the boat doesn't run while we're there; although I believe it's quite expensive, I'd imagine it would be very nice. Not to worry though - the bus will do the job.

Any more tips would be more than welcome.

I'm thinking of booking a place called Hotel am Parkring, which is just inside the First District. Is that a good spot? We really like to find hidden gem restaurants too, so if anyone has any suggestions to point us in the right direction in that regards, that would be great.

    Thanks again.

Thanks for that Vain, much appreciated.

I still haven't booked accommodation but I'll definitely give that place some consideration.

And it's always good to have an Irish bar up your sleeve for a cheeky pint of stout!

Was it an expensive city? Were any of the sights unmissable, in your opinion?

Did Vienna and Bratislava a year or two ago. Vienna was with the girlfriend for a few days, but Bratislava with the lads at an Irish game so didn't do much bar boozing.

Was in Vienna during the summer so it was boiling hot. We went out to the Schönbrunn Zoo and Palace just outside the centre of Vienna. The Zoo and Palace grounds are brilliant. The zoo has every type of animal including Pandas and Jaguars. Spent hours there. There is also some mazes in the Palace grounds. Well worth a visit if its open. You can get there on the tram/underground system.

Also went out to the Prater. Its a huge park with an amusement park with roller coasters and stuff like that. As it was summer it was roasting so took a swim in the Wiener Stadionbad, a public outdoor pool, in the Prater just beyond the National Soccer Stadium. We tried wandering into the stadium for a look but eventually got turfed out by ground staff.

Did a few touristy things like an opera to keep the girlfriend happy which was good. She liked the shopping but found it pricey enough, there is a load of high end shops. Had some nice meals outdoor around the centre but found it really quiet at night time during the week (this was July/Aug) so don't expect it to be too hectic.

There was loads more to do, mainly looking at historical stuff and river trips but didn't have time.

As for Bratislava. Nice old style centre, watch you don't trip over the statues on the street. There's a big shopping centre on the outskirts. Took us ages to find it, but was nothing special. The rest of the time we just drank.

Oh ya...get the train from Vienna to Bratislava. It quick and easy and not too expensive. We did the same when we went, flew into Vienna (stayed 3 or 4 nights) and left from Bratislava but didn't stay a night there.

Get the train from Vienna to Bratislava, it's probably the easiest way. The train will take you to Petrzalka which isn't exactly city center though, but it's walkable (30 mins), or you there's buses right outside the station.

If you walk you'll go past Aupark which is a big shopping center just over the bridge from the city center, the bus may or may not go via there, not too sure.

I know the train to Vienna is 14 euro return from BA.. so possibly 8 euro one way from Vienna? Bit of a guess.

There's not that much to see here There's the castle which is easily accessible from the city center, so do that. There's fairly nice views from up there. I'd also probably just recommend doing a lot of eating and drinking, as it's pretty good quality and fairly cheap! Plus it'll get you out of the cold as it'll be freezing then :D

Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm considering a similar trip to Vienna and Bratislava in February.

Just wondering how cold was it in February? I like to do walking tours and wander around the city, just want to make sure its not unbearable to do this that part of year.

Any feedback would be great - thanks!
