    Hi,
I have a Hp Pavillion dv6 1299ea laptop which has been giving me trouble for a while.I beleieve it was an overeating issue initially and now has come to the stage where it turns on and if try to do more than one thing with it like word process and surf internet it would freeze on a the current screen and I must power it off then. When trying to turn it back on straight away it powers for a second and switches off.It has to be left for a couple of hours before switching on again.I have brought it to a pc repair place and they said it could be motherboard. How would I know before going buying a new motherboard?

Not being smart but buy a new Laptop, not HP.

That Model is forever popping up here with heat issues. You could spend a €100+ to get this right and it'l probably just start acting up in no time.

    I'd get a new one.

Edit: Try the stuff on this Thread and see if it helps, if it doesn't get rid of it.

FWIW Newer HP laptops appear long since fine. HP Did a product line relaunch at the start of 2011 which significantly changed how their boards were constructed:

In fact, that was the training video for it. Has to be said though their old models were notoriously gank on cooling.

A new DV6 like the 6135dx should be perfectly fine, but if you're switching brands I'd recommend ASUS or Samsung as alternatives.

I have sent it to PC World to diagnose the problem as I have done all the thermal paste and compressed air things myself. If it is a motherboard failure I will fix it myself and if all is good I will sell it and buy a new laptop. I am going to New York in a few weeks and thinking of picking up one over there.Any recommendations?

Thanks for the reply aswell..much appreciated

Everyone should skip this generation of HP Laptop to teach them a Lesson.

If buying over there then Overheal is probably your best source for a recommendation as he's living over there.

What's your budget and what do you want to do with it?

I would spend up to 800-850 euros. I'm in third year of a computer systems degree and will be doing a good bit of development work and also I dj so I would have music production software and things like that aswel.

Samsung has a very nice, and powerful laptop out:

basically mac clones without the mac. Half the price and more powerful under the hood, except perhaps the GPU. Otherwise they are still blazing fast PCs.

ASUS U46E series would be worth a look too. Their business models look resilient as hell, too but I havent seen them in the shops.

At the end of the day though as an Irish customer you're still best off with Dell for their ability to support you domestically. Anybody else and you can expect hefty shipping costs if you need to make a warranty claim. Alternatively, go for the Hail Mary and buy something e'spensive and reliable to begin with.

I put a few up in this thread that would suit, haven't a clue as to the price for the equivalent in the States. Prices are bit cheaper now than I have in the link.

Make sure you set it up before you bring it back as you can be asked to turn it on at Airport check in and may run into bother if it doesn't go to the Desktop....or so I read in another Thread around here somewhere.

Thanks for the replies lads..I'm really looking at those mac clones..the alumimum casing really looks solid. I think I might go for the samsung if I see it over in the states.
