I have a gas-fired system, Potterton boiler, providing hot water and heating. Recently, hot water is fine, but little or no heat in rads. Now then, I'm an OAP and was never a plumber, but I noticed a temperature difference between the pipes befor and after this Siunvic thing - which is simply connected to a mains switch. Took it off and twisted tghe valve open by hand, and all seems well. According to the diagram, this switch has two additional contacts, and the motor part of it has, in attion to the brown and blue mains wires, an orange and a grey wire as well. These, however, are simply cut off at the switch end of the cable. Oh, yes, mains is present and switch working. Question is, can I simply leave the pesky thing off altoigether, and simply turn the in-line valve by hand? Are there any safety implications? If the thing is simply a motorised valve with a manual switch, it seems like a bit of overkill; all it means is that you click a switch to save moving a lever. Am I right, or am I missing something here? (Real problem is, I did my annual service on the boiler a month ago and my better half is starting to mutter about problems "since you were at it." Any advice appreciated.

what you have is a motorized valve

as well as operating by the switch,it should be controlled by a wall mounted thermostat(have you one fitted and is it turned on?)

there should be a manual over ride switch on the valve which allows you to open the valve without removing it from the pipework(usually a sliding arm which slots into recess to prevent spring back)

there is however no harm in removing the valve and leaving it off the pipework

Thanks, Meercat. Sorry for the delay, I've been off the air for a few days. Yes, what you say makes sense, if it were indeed controlled by a 'stat. However, as I mentioned, those two wires were cut off by the cowboy who installed the system, so that the only control is the manual switch. I'm going to simply leave the motor off the valve, which I can operate by hand as and when it's needed. Thanks for the response, though; I'm not at all confident with this stuff and your help is much appreciated.
