Does anybody here know anything about Wavetable Synth and how to get it onto my PC . I use a programme that requires it and i used to have it prior to a problem with my OS "Vista" .

After i got my computer back from having some work done on it i was unable to hear certain files that i had downloaded . Im a musician and need this programme and although it works fine i just cant get any sound from it . I have been looking at a few possible solutions but im not a computer expert and not sure how to go about implementing them .
This was one possible solution that i came accross http://www.technologyquestions.com/technology/windows-xp/38450-problem-microsoft-gs-wavetable-sw-synth.html but i dont know how to be checking "drives etc" also i downloaded the link at the bottom of this PDF but it has made no difference http://tanageraudioworks.com/Datasheets/Microsoft_GS_Wavetable_Synth_Issues.pdf

If anybody has a relitavly easy solution to this it would be great . The programme i am trying to run is called Guitar pro 5 v5.2 .

    Thanks

I think Guitar Pro uses MIDI to play back the files... I know Power Tab does... The Wavetable Synth is normally what the sound card refers to it's bank of MIDI playback sounds as.... i.e. when you play a MIDI file, the system uses the Wavetable Synth for playback..

First questions would be a) does your PC play back normal audio (mp3, youtube etc etc) b) does it play back any other MIDI files (file link below for testing)..

    Hi Jonathan

I think our paths may have crossed on the musicians forum once or twice , thanks for the reply .

All midi files are playing even the link that you posted . My issue is with G Pro and this "wavetable synth" or "swmidi" as it is also known .

Check this picture where it says wavetable synth in port devices i dont have that , if you can figure out a way to get that onto my audio settings that would be great .

    Cheers

    Hi Bayles,

okay, so we've established there is nothing wrong with your MIDI in Windows... so it seems the problem is isolated to G Pro... What you have below looks fine...

Just check that the volume of the MIDI .. usually called SW Synth on your volume mixer .... is not set to zero... There have been a few quirks with different apps that I've had that for some reason set the SW Synth volume level to zero... so check for this..

Could also be a driver issue.. What soundcards do you actually have in your PC..?

This screenshot is not mine its actualy Malice,s the MOD in musicians forum . I was just using it as an example , if you look where it says wavetable synth in port device i dont have that in mine and cant get it my options are none and none like the other channels . As for finding SW SYNTH i cant find it on my computer (trust me i have looked hard for months) . I have just downloaded "DirectX" from windows like Malice suggested but it has made no difference .

Okay well the SW Synth MUST be working, as if it was not you simply would not hear any MIDI... When you go in to "Sound And Audio Properties" in Control Panel.. what do you see under MIDI Playback devices...

If it was my own PC, the first thing I would try would be
    - remove Guitar Pro.
    - install latest sound card drivers
    - reinstall Guitar Pro..

edit: just saw your post above... For some reason Guitar Pro is not seeing the MIDI playback device on your PC... I would still do what I suggest above..

I updated the soundcard a few days ago , if you can recommend somewhere online to do it again i will try it.

I have just uninstalled and reinstalled GP and it has made no difference . The crazy thing is even Arobas GP,s provider cant even give me a solution

You tend to find a lot of quirky little bugs with software that is not widely used...

There may be something wrong with Windows, that for some reason something has got messed up... I had an issue like this with a game called Crysis a few years ago... tried everything with it, every update, every fix on their forum, but nothing worked... As a test I got a spare hard drive and installed a new copy of Windows on it and Crysis worked fine..(i.e. there was something wrong with my own copy of Windows)...

I'm sure this suggestion is probably no good to you, but I would think that if you cannot get a fix for your current install of Windows then it is something like reinstall that you are looking at... If you have exhausted all other options and you just need the damned thing to work then I would suggest this as a solution.. albeit, not a very convenient one...

Without being able to see it, that's the best I can suggest..
