Suppose it was only a matter of time but I'm surprised it has been this quick. I'm sure it isn't up to the same scratch as Siri, but it looks the have got some impressive results considering the limited time they have put in.

Anyone tried it? I have it downloaded but also need to download some google speech pack so going to do that at home later and try it out.

Would be interested to know how it stacks up to Google Voice, which is already pretty good, and from the couple of videos of Siri even does some things like currency conversion better than Siri.

Though I was a bit put out when I asked Google Voice "Do you like Sex" and She replied "Yes, but not with you"

Nice idea but I have to question why this is being touted so much? Voice activation for different things have been around for a while but just because it's the 'killer app' on the new iPhone (and obviously it's only been thrown in as the killer app because Apple knew that the new iPhone isn't a dramatic leap forward that their userbase had been hoping for and it needed something extra), everyone thinks it's cool and groovy to have voice activation.
It was the same with Facetime - prior to that, loads of phones had video calling but nobody used it. Then Facetime came along and made it 'look cool' and everyone was mad about it for about 5 minutes. Now nobody uses it again, despite every phone manufacturer being forced to put a camera on the front of the phone. Siri will be popular for about 5 minutes, until people realise how retarded they look shouting voice commands at their phones.

The big thing with Siri for me is that you doesn't seem like you have to think about what you say it. With any other voice activation you have to start each command with a specific set of words for it to do anything. Maybe I'm wrong on that.

That is the leap forward it seems to have taken.

    Using Siri
How do I ask Siri something?
To talk to Siri, hold down the Home button on your iPhone 4S. You’ll hear two quick beeps and see “What can I help you with?” on the screen. Just begin speaking. The microphone icon lights up to let you know that Siri hears you talking. Once you’ve started a dialogue with Siri, tap the microphone icon to talk to it again.

There’s more than one way to talk to Siri. When the screen is on, simply bring iPhone 4S up to your ear. You’ll hear two quick beeps to indicate that Siri is listening to you.

Siri also works with headphones and Bluetooth headsets. When you’re using headphones with a remote and microphone, you can press and hold the center button to talk to Siri. With a Bluetooth headset, press and hold the call button to bring up Siri.

Siri waits for you to stop talking, but you can also tap the microphone icon to tell Siri you’re done talking. This is useful when there’s a lot of background noise.

With the exception of raising the phone to your ear to activate it, the method of activation is the same with any other voice activation system I've used before.

He means to get it to actually do something, not get it to listen.
With Vlingo etc you have to start with "Text" "Facebook" "Navigate" depending what you do. With Siri you can phrase it differently then just using set commands

    Ah right, I didn't realise that. I haven't used Vlingo. I still think it's a gimmick though!

Oh its a gimmick alright. Gimmicks can work pretty well though. Except with Irish accents

Just noticed this thread before I was going to start a new one..

I was interested in the whole concept of Siri and how it would work on the iPhone 4s, looks like a massive gimmick alright and really don't think it's anything that anyone would actually use long term on the iPhone 4s, I mean, most of the actions you want to do could probably done quicker without opening up Iris/Siri and saying the command.

Apart from that, I was interested to see what alternatives were available for the Android platform, surprisingly, I read that Iris for Android was developed in 8 hours after the announcement of Siri, pretty good..

There seems to be another app as well called SpeakToIt Assistant.

I've just downloaded both and haven't had a chance to play with them as I don't want to look like a weirdo calling out strange commands to my phone in front of others..

Anyone had experience with any of these? What do you think etc?
