Job loss tally in Waterford city

Lads, Nypd in another thread asked how many jobs had been lost in Waterford over the past few years. Maybe we could put together a tally?

My own view is that we should not just include the post-Lehman's collapse, but also include from about 2004-2005 when Bertie's government were really doling out the dosh and making manufacturing (which let's face it is Waterford's mainstay) uncompetitive. Our problems started then in my view.

    I'll get the ball rolling:

Waterford Crystal - when? - how many jobs?
ABB - when? - how many jobs?
    TalkTalk - September/October 11 - 575 jobs
    Guhring - October 11 - 38 jobs

    Total: 613 jobs

Add away lads, and maybe try and keep it in chronological order...

add another 120 approx in earlier rounds of redundancies from talktalk. march 2009 - approx 12, march 2010 - approx 55, march 2011 approx 60. i could be wrong on the exact numbers but these are roughly right. also the company did not back fill any leavers over a year period. the site went from a peak workforce of about 750 in 2009 to closed 2 years later.

The govt/ida got away with murder in the publicity stakes during the recent closure. while it was a shock the site closed in one go the writing had been on the wall for sometime that things were not well yet nothing was done.

good idea for a thread but Will be hard to quantify a lot of the smaller scale layoffs etc.

btw sorry bout the crap punctuation am posting from my phone

    Techniform 2009 I think. Approx. 30 jobs

Waterford Crystal: think it was about 800-900 jobs gone, in 2009 (re-opened in 2010 with 100 jobs re-gained)

Teva Pharmaceuticals: 350-400 jobs in 2009 or 2010

GSK Dungarvan: 130 jobs over the next few years]

Belfry Hotel: dunno, maybe 30 jobs

Loads of smaller companies (retail, services & hospitality) are still going but have gradually let people go over the last few years, which never gets reported. Hard to put a figure on that but it must be in the hundreds at least.

In effect the Waterford Crystal job losses were almost like double job losses when you factor in what happened to their pensions. The loss in pension income would have taken a huge amount of money from the local economy.

For anyone who watched George Lee's show last night - frightening viewing!

I've heard David Flynn's is closing down too. Not sure how many are working there now.

I'd say 50+ folk working on the motormile have lost jobs in the past 3 years.... probably couldn't put a number on the amount of constructions workers unemployed.... Muldoons are gone and a fair few pubs have gone, or reduced staff, tesco/aldi/lidl have provided some employment though..

Lads, you're better off sticking to big numbers of high profile jobs because lots of small jobs would have also been created as well. If 50 jobs are created or lost at once, it makes the headlines. 3 jobs does not.

    Kromberg and Schubert.
Waterford Stanley let a few good as well (I think).
    HP Chemie.
    Hitol ????.
    Nypro.

AFAIK, for every 2 or 3 three jobs lost in the economy, another 1 job is lost somewhere else.

This is miss-reported as this isn't the actual number of people directly affected at the TalkTalk site although it is the number of "TalkTalk Group" employee. You have to remember the site also employed security staff and canteen staff who are also out of a job now.

This makes the figure roughly 588 - 590

As I said above Cabaal, throw in the other 100+ made redundant out of there over the last 2 years and the total goes above 700

hitol left off 30 odd when they went under- hasbro went from 800 strong in the late 90's to aprox 230 now excluding seasonal staff(about 40)most jobs of which were lost in the 00's

also douglas engineering in the northern estate,
honeywell/allied signal left off 150 approx in 2008
    nypro was around 200

The tally at this point is around 3000 adding the numbers in the previous posts and rounding off.

Shocking. When I got whacked at American Express I was one of 7000 worldwide but that was only 10% of the workforce in 2008. It really doesn't matter what the numbers are when you are one of the unlucky!! Believe me it blows!

It's shocking the amount of jobs that have gone in the city and the thread is barely 2 pages

    Sanofi Aventis 190...ish in 2008
Honeywell Turbo plant has been steadily leaving temps go since last christmas. I'd guess 50 or so.
Bausch and Lomb is slowly modernising and expanding but unfortunitely needs less manual labour. 27 temps got notice 3 weeks ago.
