Tax Return - Working in North

I have been working in the north for three years and for 2008 and 2009 i paid to get my personal tax return done - I was wanting to do it myself this year as it seems like my case is very simple (just income in sterling - no other income).

There were a couple of things though that i was wondering could people help me with - the north tax year is april to april whereas the south is the calender year - how then do you calculate your salary based on my P60. do i take a proportion off each.

Also what exchange rate gets used?

I would appreciate any help or guidance..
