Hi, can anyone tell me where is the cheapest place to get 500ml brown beer bottles. Our home brew is nearly ready and we need to get this sorted quickly. Has anyone ever bought directly from a pub. If so. how much per bottle. Thanks guys

You can get new brown bottles here off thehomebrewcompany I think the bulmers bottles in pubs are reused so not sure if you will have luck there unless you pay something. How long is the beer fermenting?

The ox-bar ones are a little cheaper and don't require caps or a capper.

You needn't be in a rush, OP. Your beer will happily sit in the fermenter for five or six weeks with no ill effects.

These swing tops from alpack are very good,,reusable and cheap too.

Its nearly 3 weeks in the fermenter now. Has anyone used the ox-bar bottles? Are they as good as glass bottles and will they last being reused over and over? Thanks for the replies so far

I've certainly had beer from ox-bar bottles and it was always totally fine. And yes, they are reusable.

    :confused::D

Any IPA kit really. The trick is to dry hop: throw 20g or so of leaf Cascade, Centennial or similar hop into the fermentor a week before bottling. Scoop it out with a sanitised sieve before you bottle to avoid clogging your syphon.

At €1.51 a bottle it's hard to recommend those when for not a lot more you can get the same bottle full of beer (Flensburger).

Grolsch can be had for around €1.80 a bottle. And don't worry about the green glass -- who leaves their beer sitting around in sunlight anyway!

Where are those flensburgers at these days? (In dublin preferably!!!)

Hmm, have seen if 5 for €10.

Not sure Flensburger is that high quality, what with using hop extract and all.

Have a look at the ingredients on any German beer: it's pretty standard. In fact, it's fairly normal in breweries of any substantial size. Guinness is made with canned hop extract, for instance. The Germans are the only ones who tell us about it, however.

They're not great beers, but the Weizen is pretty decent, I think.

    Yeah, exactly.

I wouldn't be putting Flensburger any higher up the food chain than Grolsch for example.

Sure, but the bottles aren't as good. The pils ones are green and the weizen ones aren't swingtop.

Nothing wrong with green bottles as long as you don't leave you beer sitting in the sun or under strip lights.

My beer fridge is glass-fronted and by a window, so I personally wouldn't trust 'em.

That doesn't sound very energy efficient! :)

I've been keeping all my bottles, brown and green, in the fridge, in the cupboard, and in the shed for years and they've suffered no harm.

One very slight downside to the Grolsch bottles is they're not quite 500ml. Only an issue when it comes to doing calculations.

Eurospar killiney & dalkey both have (or had) flensburger.

a lad on this site had out of date 500ml brown swingtops selling for £1.50

A mate of mine was in need of a few bottles for his first brew, and he got a few bag loads off the Bull and Castle.
Just give them a buzz and see if they have any lying around (if your based in Dublin that is!!!). They usually have loads and are happy to help us home brewers!! Worth a try.
All they need is a good clean and there good to go!

I have a friend who was selling crates of the Bulmers-style pint bottles in crates a while back. I'll see if he's still onto it.

Get on to your local and ask them to keep non-returnable 500ml bottles for you, shouldn't be a huge problem for them.
A promise of a six pack of home brewed beer will always sweeten things for the barman!!!
