Water Leaking into Cab

    Hi All,

I have a quick one for you. I have a 2005 Ford Mondeo running great, however there seems to be water getting into the cab. the floor in the passenger footwell seems to be constantly wet, and this in turn means the windows keep fogging up and theres some mold (seems to bother the OH for some reason :D). I've had a look at the rubber around the door and it appears fine, so I'm assuming theres a gromit missing under the carpet. Is it a big job to go in search of the leak? Would a mechanic do it? independent or dealer? Or are there any other locations for the leak to be coming from?

    All feedback is welcome,
    Thanks in advance,

    Rob

The doors on mondeo's are very prone to this,I've had quite a few, when pinpointed, it can be fixed easily, best you can do is get someone to put a waterhose to the car and you get inside with a good led lamp and see where its coming in.

Not really sure, is it common problem for fords, but in other cars (fiat, vw) - that window fog and wet floor means heating matrix is leaking, and needs to be changed. usually front panel has to go off, but not sure if ford need to take front panel (dashboard) off to change it.
if your car has coolant (antifreeze), you could notice , just smell it, and it is bit thicker than water... like cooking oil (just smell different), if you are cooling car with water, change it to antifreeze, and see if you find it on floor.

Also you should notice coolant level drop.

heater matrix should cost 40 -80 quid , dont recommend put second hand in it, reconditioned would be bit cheaper, labor would cost quiet a lot. on my punto i did myself.

    good luck.

edit: Also check your engine, does it goes overheat on regular basis, or has bad idling, so "new" ford i think, shouldn't be heater matrix gone (unless all live cooling with tap water), could be caused by leaking headgasket, which pumps pressure in to cooling system, and heater matrix was the weakest point, where excess of pressure run out.

    really ... good luck.

I would hope that the solution is this simple. I didnt even consider the doors, I just assumed the water was coming from the underneath. This is something I'll try at the weekend. thanks.

The engine is fine, and running perfectly. To be honest this is a long term problem and primarily in wet conditions so I'm thinking its a leak allowing water in as opposed to something from the engine causing it (noticed it first last winter - circa february). It is however an avenue I may have to look into if I cant find a solution as described above. Thanks for the advice though, it was something I hadnt considered.

My mark 3 leaked like hell due to an incorrectly sealed windscreen.

When it cracked and got replaced, I told them to double seal it. Its fine now.

My previous mondeo leaked around the air filter thing on right at back of engine compartment ( looking at car from front.) A run with a mastic gun sorted that one out.

Let us know how you get on.

My neighbours windscreen also leaked. Any dampness inside the car will cause condensation on the glass.

I think the windscreen is ok, I'm just hoping its dry on sunday so I can have a look at it. I wont be around it in day light before that.

There is an awful lot of condensation in the car now, slows me down trying to clear them so finally going to tackle the problem and resolve it.

How do you know the windscreen is alright?

I had mine replaced and it wasnt sealed right, the passenger footwell was soaking. It was last winter and the condensation froze on the INSIDE of the windows LOL.

I had it replaced again and then ran the car with heat on full, directed down into the footwells.

But you still have to find the leak....

i genuinely dont know, I'm just assuming/hoping. I'm going to give it a few hours (hopefully at the weekend) and try and locate the source of the leak. My initial feelings are, its not gonna be easy.

had a look at it tonight, there seems to be water around the bottom of the passenger door. I reckon its coming from there. The car is getting really damp at this stage so have to do something about it. Did a bit of googling, a Pollen filter seems to be an issue with these cars too.

The earlier mondeo(93-00) suffered with the pollon filter seal leaking,i dont think it effected the mk3,not ours anyway:)
Take the door card off & see if the seal is torn or in place at the bottom.

It's the door, its a common mk3 problem, focus on getting it sealed up.
The Pollen Filters not the issue on mk3's.

Cheers, that's where I'm gonna concentrate my efforts. Have been reading up on it online to familiarise myself with what's required.
