New Yaris

Not the most exciting news ever, but it now does 72mpg (officially 59mpg) on the combined cycle, and there are likely to be more people coming on here looking for something like that than the new F30.

I think it looks a bit of a mongrel Mazda 2/ Huyndai i30 and the auto is now 7 speed. It has seatbelt reminders for the rear seats as well as the front now and comes with a reversing camera, something I find strange given its size, but given its target market it's probably necessary.

Launch seems to have gone unnoticed. Probably because there's a glut of unregged old models out there. Only noticed it because of the TV ad when I was thrown in front of the TV with manflu today.

What really struck me was that on inspection Toyota have come into the real world on accessories and appear to be offering warning triangles, hi-vis and first aid kits at cost, so much so you could bargain them in fairly easy. All 3 for under €20 list price.

The rear window winders are the same as a 1987 corolla. Enough said.

Can't speak for the new Yaris, but the winders in our 1990 Carina were much more solid than the ones in the 2006 Yaris in the driveway now.

I see they have reverted back to the analog fuel gauge. The digital one in the Auris/Avensis and Corolla was a silly gimick imo.

Overall I don't think the new model is a huge leap forward in design or packaging especially over the last model which was poor with regards build quality and reliability in contrast to the original Yaris.

You look at the Koreans and with each new generation of model they are progressing leaps and bounds. They are now surpassing the Japanese, the Hyundai i20 and new Kia Rio look better offerings than this Yaris or a Micra and have superior warranties. Either the likes of Toyota refuse to acknowledge this or simply don't know how to counter act the massive Korean competition they are facing.

I can only presume people who would choose the new Yaris would do so because of Toyota's legendary reputation or they are simply afraid to try something else. Generally Toyota, VW, ect have a very loyal but conservative customer base where they have automatically bought the same brand every 2 years and buying a different make is simply not an option.

I was at the rather tame launch in Dublin last month, the new Yaris is head and shoulders above the old one, it's lower roof line means you won't be in the passenger seat every time you turn a corner.
It's pricey though, you don't get air con as standard until you get to Sol level, you do get a colour reversing camera and front electric windows along with lots of air bags.
It's €15,895 + delivery for the Luna model with no options.
The competition give us the Kia Picanto that comes with bluetooth, voice control, Air con, USB/aux and cable, 4 electric windows, and lots of safety for €12,595! The EX model is great, good looking too.

So that's why there wasn't much said about the new Yaris

Isn't the Picanto smaller than the Yaris though, more like the size of the Aygo or i10? Still impressive spec for the class car and price though.

Technically it's in a smaller class but when you sit into both the Picanto has just as much room if not a bit more.
Drives like a go cart too, the three pot engine sounds sporty. 69bhp won't win any drag races mind

Not that Yaris drivers would care about that stuff. If it goes from A to B for 7 years under warranty and saves them €3K up front, I think it's a winner.

    This looks really, really poor....

Toyota have hit a new low with regard to uncompetitiveness.

I was seriously thinking about buying a new Yaris, now I am having second thoughts. A lot of positive said about KIA, did not even cross my mind to look at one

Pity they didn't discontinue the 1.0
The 1.33 dual vvt-i engine is a cracker.

True the 1.33 is a much better (and more expensive) engine but it's all about the CO2 and purchase price these days. Still the Yaris will sell in numbers for some reason Toyota people keep buying Toyota's

Diesel Hybrids are here, the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid 4 and there will be more of them from all the euro companies, this spells the end of the petrol hybrid if you can call the sales of hybrid in this country a market at all.

Methinks Chevy might be a little late to the eco party in Europe
