Alternate Picking or Economy Picking?

Awhile ago I thought the best way to go was economy picking but now I think it might have limited my speed in a way. So I'm trying now to just go for alternate picking all the time. It's fine going from the low e to the high e but When I come back up, I find myself slipping back into economy picking.

So now when I'm practising alternate picking exercises, I'm fine doing them slow but When I try go fast my muscle memory just goes back to economy picking.

What do people think is the best way to go? I reckon economy picking is better for legato kind of stuff. Wish I didn't get into the habit when I was practising speed picking. :(

Basically if you want a smoother sound, go economy picking. If you want a more aggressive sound, strict alternate. Once you're comfortable with one it's fairly easy to add a little of the other in specific situations.

You do have to commit to one or the other until you develop a solid foundation, but after that I think it's okay to incorporate both styles. :)
