Mercedes benz Key Fob

A heads up that will save you a few quid if you encounter this problem.

A friend of mine today told me he was having problems for the last week starting the engine of his mercedes benz 98 as the electronic keyfob was not working properly and he had to keep putting the keyfob in and out for 15 to 20 minutes to get the engine started. he went into a place to see could he get the keyfob fixed and they said they don't fix keyfobs but it would cost him €200 to replace it with a new one. he said he would call back later.

I told him I would have a look at it and I took the keyfob apart and removed the circuit board with small pinchers as the circuit-board will slide out from the bottom of the keyfob when pulled after you remove the white back plate.

I had a look at it and noticed that the small black square-shaped lazer diode at the top of the circuit-board was covered with lint and dust so I cleaned it with alcohol - vodka, reassembled it and it is working perfect now.

I would just like to say to people that might ever encounter this problem to do the same and save yourself the ripoff €200 cost of having it replaced when it is only lint and dust that is blocking the lazer signal getting through to the ignition receiver. I fixed 4 other merc keyfobs like this many years ago and forgot all about it so I thought it would be a good idea to put it here which might help some people save some cash and not be fooled into paying such monies for a simple do it yourself fix.
