I was full on going to buy a acer timeline x in pc world but then I went into Harvey Norman today and one of the guys in there was telling me that the have reliability problems?

He said toshiba was the way to go. Now you might just think that he was truing to sell me one of his laptops. They were sold out of the timeline but they did have other acers. He said a lot of the acer desktops were returned with problems. I know they are desktops but....

Anyone find any reliability problems with acer?

You can get problems with all makes of laptop, they may have a suppliers deal on toshibas and may be getting extra commission on them, all Laptops/Pcs come with a one year warranty no matter what brand, Acer don't have any of the graphics card problems afaik that HP or Dell have had so I'd say go for your Acer.

I've had my acer now for 2 years. Not a single problem. Guy in my local place also tried to get me to buy another make but i have no interest in giving them commission to get a worse laptop. Compare them like for like and pick the best value.

I've worked in computer repair for two years and both Acer and Toshiba laptops are fairly reliable.

As a salesperson everyone seems to have their opinions but I try to stay informed.

Acer and Compaq really seem like the bottom of the pack. They are great if you're on a strict budget. But if you are investing real money in a desktop, go with an HP, or an ASUS. Gateways fall into the Middle and Dells are found in every category, their XPS machines are actually built very nicely - one of the few towers out there with a power supply specced for expansion.

Pro Tip: Ask a salesperson if they work on commission, don't assume it. Thats half of why I like my job: Im not commission and rather than a giant push for upsell my corporate overlords understand that it's better to get people what they need/want, not fleece them senseless. Doesn't make for good repeat business in the 10 year plan.

If it's like a Best Buy, where we have the sales floor and we have a seperate precinct where the computer techs work on fixing laptops, go ask the techs for their opinion. They're quite blunt; and their opinion on brands, makes, and software can be good insight. Through them I've learned to be wary about Sony laptops: while the things themselves are nice, Sony's warranty system is very draconian and convoluted.

Mmm yeah. Acer arent the most reliable brand in my experience. Im a pretty hardcore user. My last 2 acer laptops didnt last longer than 1 year without something going wrong.

I now have a Timeline X. The 5810TG i believe it was one of the first ones from acer to come out with 8.5+ battery life.

When i got it, it used to freeze on me if i ran anything intense on it. Eventually after a couple of months i got sick of it and called up acer. They picked it up from my door and delivered it back the same way. Apparently it was a faulty keyboard.

Stopped happening since though :) It will be two years old for me in Feb. In that time it suffered a shoulder height drop on the corner and survived only with dent plastic on the bottom case ;)

in my experience Acer are less well made and configured than other brands like Toshiba, Lenovo, Asus, HP, Sony, Samsung and even Dell. You should be ok if you buy one but there's a higher chance that something will go wrong than other makes... your choice.
