I was just wondering if anybody can give me a run down on the procedure to getting an esb meter moved from inside the house to outside. We're getting all the electrics rewired so it seems like a good idea. I phoned esb and was simply told send us €395 and once we've cleared the payment we'll sort it out :confused:

So a couple of questions, Do they send somebody out who says yes or no and where the meter can go? And if yes do i have to wait for them to send out paperwork before my electrician can start. Thanks

    Hi piperh,

Although this is an ESB Networks query (they're a separate company from ourselves), I thought I might be able to help as I happen to be somewhat familar with the process.

Your electrician, who will be doing the rewiring, will more than likely be familiar with the ESB Networks' specifications as to where the new meter location can and should be fitted. He/she need not wait for ESB Networks to send out any paperwork before getting started. But if there is doubt as to where the meter should go, your electrician would be best of arranging a site visit from a Networks technician.

As outlined on their website here, ESB Networks require a fee and an E.T.C.I. wiring certification before they can go ahead and move the actual meter. The cert is for safety reasons.

    Hope this has helped,

    Thanks,

    David.

    Hi PiperH

If its a simple straight forward relocation that is all it will cost. In my situation the power comes to my house and then crosses into my neighbours house. 7 years ago when I carried out some work on my house I contacted the ESB about running the cables underground a guy came our told me to run a duct from A to B and they put a new pole at B. I followed up the relocation about 18 months later and I was told I need 2 ducts to be put in place one for me and one for my neighbour (it makes cutting you off easier) and I was told the relocation would cost me over €1,500 now I have a duct I paid for an ugly pole at the bottom of the drive doing nothing and still have the indoor overhead power lines.

Bottom line is the ESB will send someone out to advise before hand. Do this and get there costs in writing.

    Best of luck

Thanks Cram, we have a pole and its overhead cables coming into the meter inside the house, but we want the meter moved to outside, so instead of cables running all down the front of the house they will go into the side, which is nearest the pole so heres hoping it won't be to bad :(.

We did ask about them moving the pole 3ft across so we could widen the drive and was told it would cost €12,000:eek::eek:
