Lads, I want to set up a server and I'm using a video on youtube to help. The guy says I need to open port 25565 to allow people to join the server. I have an Eircom Netopia 2247-02 router. On his linksys router the process is very simple. I'm not sure how to open ports on mine as on his video he says you must have enabled both UDP and TCP under the protocol section. I can only choose one or the other. Also he says you need to enter in an IP Address, I don't see an option for this and also what is "Base Host Port"? Do I just enter 25565 here?
Also- Do I need to have this port open for myself to play? As I can't connect to the server...

you just need to set up two different ones
you can name them two different things like minecraft1 and minecraft2 and then do one as UDP and one as TCP if you get me

if you just have them both opening the same port (25565) it will work no problem :D

pm me if you need any more help!

sorry i missed the bit about the ip
have a read of this http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netopia/2247-02/Minecraft_Server.htm
i know the eircom set-up is a bit different but just set the open and close port for 25565
    should be simple enough...relax :D

I've already forwarded port 25565 with TCP and when I try to do it again selecting UDP, with a different name, it says they are overlapping! So I have to choose either TCP or UDP...

I'll be back home tomorrow and I can have a look at my router and see what you mean.

Could you post a screen shot?
