Insulate an External Pipe

I have a pipe (1/2 inch) which runs along the wall outside my house (it comes from the attic tank and feeds an electric shower in the bathroom). The pipe always freezes during the winter meaning that I can't use the shower and it's a total nightmare to be honest. What's the best way of insulating the pipe in order to stop it freezing? The normal lagging that I have been putting on it is not working. Also, does anyone know anyone reliable and reasonably priced in the Dublin area who might do such a job?

    Thanks.

What you need is black coloured armaflex pipe insulation.

Its what is used on external air con/extractor units and pipes and also on solar system pipes too.

    Does the job perfecrly.

I cannot think of any situation where i have seen a pipe for a shower outside the house. This is wrong for so many reasons.

Why cant it be moved inside. Its like useing superglu to repair a glass window it might work but its better to fix the problem right.

The guy who installed the shower said that the shower had to be fed from the attic tank. The attic is at the back of the house and a long way from the place where I wanted the shower. It was not possible to run the pipe internally so he said that it should go out of the attic, along the roof and then along the wall and from there into the bathroom. It works fine but always freezes in cold weather rendering me without a shower. I just need to make the pipe totally freeze proof.

    Thats mad.

Sounds like he wasnt prepared to do some hard graft and wanted a quick and easy job and money too.

Did you check yourself that its not possible to run the pipe internally??

You're probably right. I'm constantly getting ripped off by tradesmen to the point of just losing all hope of ever getting anything done properly in my house. My problem now is that I have the external pipe that needs doing.

Unless the insulation u use is 100% water resistant then it wont work when wet. In any event if exposed to sun and wind etc it will deteriorate rapido, as well as birds and other vermin having a go for nest material

In my view, if you cant reroute the pipe then look at pre-insulated pipe as a solution

    this stuff will workhttp://www.cleanenergyireland.ie/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/HTArmaflex-Solar.pdf

where as this will need painting if used outside
