Hi, this is a bit of a silly question,

im gettin the trim colour coded for my car, but the body work guy insists that the trim on the door is held on by double sided tape.. Its a 3 door and if anyone can tell me that this is the case and its smooth surface under the black trim, I think im going to just remove it all together..

Anyone ever seen how that is held on? I was almost certain it was held on by clips?

One way to check. Hair dryer, heat it up and some dental floss behind it once the glue is softened.

Thinking back to an Escort I had - the door trim was held on by about 8 screws, about two on each of the 4 sides

And also clipped onto the door, we had to lift it off and slot it back on for it to align

The only thing I remember being held on by 'tape' was the grey foam sound deadening material,
but that was more of a black mastic, similar to roofing sealent - the type that remains malleable and never really dries

Yeah im sure its a tape along that line, he didnt say it was double sided tape, it was described along that line though.
thats tape you described is what holds on the lettering on the back, comes off real easy with autogylm tar remover!

As with the trim, I dont want to bend it too much as if it is held on with clips it will never bend back into place. Think i'll just say it to him and if that is the case i'll have it removed completely

i have removed doors trims from may mondeo 03 black as well. There was just double tape which clould be removed with any piece of rubber. But my problem is , that on the door are slight grey spot lines..dont know from what becouse they are on colour which wasnt in touch with tape  ..its actualy the line between tapes. Tried polish it but it didnt help, so I tried to sand it very gently with 1500grid wet sand paper on small piece but its still the same ..what the hell is that from?

Do you mean the door trim (inside of door) or door moulding (on outside of door) ?

The moulding is held on with double sided black tape. Plain paint finish underneath, once you get the tape off. However, very hard to get them off without stretching, so that they will go back on okay. Most bodyshops will not re-use and will always replace with new if removed.

I'd advise painting on the car, just tape up carefully.

Sorry I ment the external moulding on the door.

I mentioned about painting while on the car, but was told it would be risky as the trim has to be sanded.. So its best to take them off, sand and paint and then put them back on.

By plain paint do you mean its just the same as the rest of the body work? I know it may be a different shade from the fade on the bodywork not covered up.

stretching as in the tape or the moulds going out of shape?

I was just wondering mainly if there are any holes under the trim, if its smooth I may just leave them off all together, I know they are for bumps etc, but if anything the car gets whacked way more up higher where the panel comes further out.

When mine are off i'll let you know if mine is the same and what the paint people do with it.

I did de-badge the car a few months ago and I think its a similar tape on the letters, and when they were taken off there was a dirty line around each letter, is it similar to that?

I spent ages trying to get it off with all car cleaning products, eventually I gave up on them and used fairy washing up liquid neat and it came off immediatly!

yea but it seems to be under the lacquer coat..or like when some agressive glue is evaporate and after some time you can see light spots around the glue. Its difficult to describe. Will make some pic.

the glue must have been corrosive? Is it on both sides?
Do you have the parts to put them back on, prob cost less to have them colour coded and put back on? Rather than have the door done.

I know someone who has a black mondeo and it has no trim its all colour coded but it was all ordered from ford like that, I thought they may have had the same as yourself happen.

The lettering I took off had nothing like that on it. I assume its the same type of stuff?
Mine will be taken off tomorrow, im going to just leave the paint guy to do it, if its not smooth or is a differnt shade I think i'll just have them sprayed and put back on.

edit: that actually looks like it could have been rubbing off the paint? What year is your car? Could it be from wear and tear? Like the further it goes in from the edge it seems to fade? Was the moulding loose at all?

paint have not been rubbed off..all these marks are on places where was nothing to touch the paint at all. Its 03 year. My neighbour said that he will try to polish it with som special stuff. Will let u know than if it helps or not. Dont want to put the trims back on.. need to do something with these marks.
Yes.. i think mondeo's from 05 or 06 year have no trims on doors.

If they are stuck on and you want to remove them completly buy a 'toffee wheel' of ebay to remove the stuff that is left behind.

Did you try the polish stuff?

I got my car done, when I went in, the guy was saying there are little holes to join up the trim to the can and hold them in place, they're under the trim and to get them filled and painted, as there is a few of them its not really worth it. Otherwise it was smooth and no damage.

Its baffling to why its happened? Maybe you could get a touch up from a paint place to blend it and cover the marks if the polish stuff doesnt work?

    Or you could try this,
I used t-cut on my car to bring the colour out and to bring up faded parts and its very good, I have a buffer, so to do it by hand it would take much longer, only thing is it fades in the rain so I did the t-cut and then left it for a few hours and then waxed it with simonz car wax.
