Clothes shrinking

How often does this happen to you? You wash something at the recommended temperature (or even below it), don't tumble dry it, yet when you next wear it it has shrunk. I can understand this happening with cheaper clothes but it happens also with expensive ones! I stopped buying Paul Smith t-shirts as they always used to shrink.

Recently I got a Fred Perry polo, wore once, washed at 30 degrees, and now I think its a little bit shorter than it was when I bought it. Grr!

From working at Lacoste, I am all knowledge about polos! The reason they shrink "up" is due to the way they're stitched, "pique" style I believe it's called. HOWEVER if washed at 30 or recommended temperature, not tumble dried, this should not happen. If you're sure that it has shrunk, bring it back and say it's faulty. You only have a case if you really did follow the instructions perfectly though! If it's only a little bit of a shrink, it's just the fabric "settling", like if you've ever gotten a tee-shirt/jeans/shirt that is billed as pre-washed, you'll notice the fit will be slimmer.

I lived in New York for the summer and thanks to having to go to the laundrette for my washing and drying, all my clothes are a little bit smaller :p

You do see it alright but there usually is a reason. Brands like the ones mentioned above have technical depts that test clothing for washing instructions. They keep files of samples, how they were washed, dried, pressed. How many times it washed before it was piled etc.

SOmetimes the washing machine can be getting it's water supply from the hot water supply rather than the cold, so when the tank has hot water the wash is at a much hotter temp.

Also drying on the radiator can also shrink as it can raise the temp of the water in the garment before it is dry.

Def go back to the shop if you have a concern.

The way I would always handle it is, appoligise to the customer for the hassel of having to come back in. I would ask if I could measure their item against one in stock (if there was one), if it was smaller and I was able I'd do a refund, if not I would ask if I could e-mail the tech dept for their opinion and get back to the customer. Sometimes the tech dept would reply with an e-mail and pics of evidence that they washed the same product the way it should be and it was fine.

Other wise they would say straight away, go for a refund and a good will gesture and get the garment to the tech dept ASAP as they have already had a complaint about that item,.

always happens to me no matter what brand i buy.. i wash at 30 degrees but i do machine wash which i guess i shouldnt but havent got alot of room for hanging clothes around the house to dry..

I have for the last few years been buying large or xtra large t shirts and jumpers and hoping that they dont shrink smaller than a medium after i have washed them.. its hit and miss, doesnt always work, sometimes a large jumper will shrink down to a small and you cant wear it..really need to find some new system,if i hang clothes on the radiators they end up covered in dog hairs
