Hydrualic Jack > Scissor Jack

    Hi all,

On my car, there's trim that goes along the bottom of the door sills and underneath the edge of the car. There's 2 holes cut out of the trim on each side where the jacking points are. This means I can only use the scissor jack and not a hydraulic jack without damaging the trim.

My question is this - what can I do that will allow me to use the hydraulic jack and make it fit into the jacking points safely?

I tried that Tigger but the jack has to go so far in that I have no leverage to push the bar :(

Can you get some jack pads or something. Another options is to drive up on some wooden planks to give you more space to get the jack in or use ramps

What kind of car is it?

I find it hard to believe you cant get a trolley jack under there.

    It's a Mazda6 MPS

No, I don't have a flat but I want to take off the wheels soon and detar them and clean the inside rim.

When I have the hydraulic jack positioned at that point Tigger is talking about, there's about 2 inches of room for me to push down on the bar which really isn't enough.

I know what you mean, it's very annoying. I tried jacking the Corsa up at the back and couldn't get any leverage. Ended up jacking up on the sump and using something to stop the sump being damaged.

    That's a tad risky!!

BTW, I have the scissor jack in the boot but I find the hydraulic jack a lot easier to use especially when taking off 4 wheels and all the work involved in cleaning them up.

    Thanks but that's for a Mazda3.

Is there a way of getting a piece of timber cut to shape which will sit snug onto the HJ plate and into the sill jacking points?

realistically, the car doesnt matter. The principle is the same. You can get timber to raise it up and do exactly as pointed out in the images.

On a seperate note, most trolley jacks come with x2 heads a skinny round one and a large round one.

You do not need it to slot onto the jack area. The car is raised up by this point. Ive been using trolley jacks for years on all sorts of models of cars and never had to modify one yet. the only problem i get is when they car is low. In that case i need a ramp to raise it.

Do you have a small head jack on the trolley jack? Will it fit in the area of the trip? If so then use that. it doesnt need to grip around the metal like a U shape to be used.

    Hi,
Don't forget that your 2 inches of jacking clearance will increase as you lift :)

Also, this chap says he uses standard jack points with a trolley jack

Thanks E39 but I would rather not do that in case I crack the plastic bodykit piece that runs along there.

Drive the car up onto something?

Anything at all to raise the car a little to give it clearance

but once you've given i a few pumps it'll be easier?

I've tried that. It doesn't give me enough room to pump it even once :(
