i have a 3gs 32gb and want to upgrade to ios 5. i tried last week and bricked it. it wasnt recognising my sim at all so couldnt activate it. they couldnt sort it in either o2 or apple shop so i brought it to a phone repair place and they brought it back to the way it was. the guy said he couldnt sort it to upgrade it....

anyone know a way to do it? firmware is 4.1 (8B117)
    and the baseband is 06.15.00

apparently it was cause of the baseband... is there anything on cydia that brings it back to what it was? i done mind losing the jailbrake. i only need it during the summer when im away...

your on ipad baseband.... you cant (and will never be able to) update to a stock ipsw... you will have to cook a custom ipsw in redsn0w (mac) or sn0wbreeze (windows)

Just a quick question about this myself I also have a 3gs jailbroken running ios 4.1 but mine is on baseband 5.13.04. I know that there is a tethered jailbreak available but I have been told that it is possible to do an untetherd jailbreak on 3gs's on the older baseband. Is there any truth to this?

the old bootrom, not old baseband. You would have had to have bought an iPhone in the first few months, to do this run redsn0w as normal.
