Anyone know what the biggest size tyre can be fitted with tiagra calipers?

    As above.

I'l be doing adventure races next year and part of the cycle in some is on fire roads with gravel etc, but most is on tarmac road. Ideally i'd use my road bike, but id like to try fit a bigger tyre on, possiibly semi nobbly too. Any ideas?

I suspect your issue will be with frame clearance rather than caliper. My Giant FCR will take max 28mm but there's loads of clearance in the caliper.

Just looking at the frame there, I have 23c tyres on at the moment and with that theres about 1cm give above the wheel and either side of the tyre walls and the forks. Rouughly the same on the back wheel. Suppose my only option is to try it out

Can you get a set of guards on also?

I had a set of guards on with 25mm tyres but they wouldn't fit with 28mm. I'm now back on 25mm tyres and using a set of Race Blade guards which fit but don't protect the calipers from crap. These would work with 28mm tyres. I must try a set of Cruds next time...

Who knows? Mfrs lie about widths.

Conti 4000S in 23mm are actually 24mm wide.

The 28s I've used have measured about 26.5mm wide.

Apparently Randonneur Pro 35mm are actually 32mm.

Which means 23->35mm requires only 4mm more lateral clearance, rather than 6mm as you'd think from the specs.
