    Hi guys

I know absolutely nothing about plumbing etc and have rang bord gais on this and all they did was recommend a service, but ive been reading up and apparently a service wont fix my problem.

Over the last couple of months my potterton gas boiler has been acting up. It started by getting very noisey and rattling when it was on. That eventually stopped. Then it started switching itself off after about 30 minutes. The ignition light would stop and the red lights would just blink on and off..

I noticed the prssure was very low, so i bled rads etc and the pressure rose. But now over the last few days things have gotten worse. It wont stay on for more than 20 seconds without knocking itself off. And to make matters worse. Our hot press immersion doesnt work. Im not sure how long this has been going on for as we dont normally use the immersion, but absolutely not hot water in the house at all.

Im in work and dont know the make, but the house is only about 9 years old, i moved in last year, so it cant be an ancient boiler. Will i need a new boiler or is this a more serious issue.

Sorry for the vagueness here, not a plumber and have no clue whats going on.

You really need to get an RGI (registered gas installer) to take a look at this. The boiler has multiple safety devices which could lock it out for a number of different reasons, such as low water pressure, low water flowrate, overheating, fan not running etc etc. It's unlikely but possible that you will need a new boiler if the cost of repairs is greater than the cost of replacement.

Sorry to be blunt but why did you continue to use the boiler for months when it was making unusual noises / tripping out? Both are clear signs that something is wrong and continuing to use it is likely to increase the damage and also put yourself and your family at risk. What could have been easily fixed back then may have escalated to a much more expensive problem now.

The immersion problem is separate, and to be honest the most likely problem is that the element has failed and needs to be changed. An electrician will tell you straight away by doing some simple tests, expect to pay Eur 60 - 100 for a new element fitted.

You can find an RGI in your area here

Its not my house, im a tenant. Ive been saying it to my flatmate for months to get it sorted ( he is the owner) and he did nothing about it. I have been on to him everyday. The only excuse i got was that it wasnt a problem, those noises have been there forever . seriously, its what he said!! hes been living there for 6 years so i figured he knew what he was talking about.

How did you reach this conclusion based on your self proclaimed ignorance?
