Terrible :( Dan's last comment on his USA Today driver blog.
As long as I can find some speed and keep up with the pack, I'll do everything I can to put on a show.

I cried watching that video. It only seems like yesterday he was winning at Indy.

I thought (and hoped) the days of fatalities were at an end. I suppose, as safe as motorsport is these days, sometimes just things are out of control of the drivers and teams. What a way for Indycar to wrap up the season.

Was watching the 5 lap salute there, and got tears in my eyes when Amazing Grace started playing.

I'm not saying this because of what's happened, but Dan Wheldon was one of my favourite open wheel drivers in all classes. I genuinely can't name somebody who I can say I admired more than him. Since his Rookie season I've always watched IndyCars for him and one or two others, but mainly just for him.

I was too young to remember Senna's death, but I now know what it feels like to see a racer (or indeed a sportsman) that you admired so much lose his life doing what he loved doing.

RIP, Dan. You will be gravely missed and thanks for the memories.

RIP Dan. Sad to see you go. One of the most genuine and friendly characters in the sport. Great ambassador for karting too, racing whenever he could. He was scheduled to race the SKUSA Supernationals in November, in Vegas ironically enough. Sadly not to be, rather an empty kart will be under the tent instead.

Heart goes out to his family, especially his wife and two children left behind.
    Godspeed buddy.

Absolutely shocked when I heard about this.

I remember back when he was doing well in European karting in a Fullerton and was one of the first of his generation to look to the US to build his career. A real pioneering move at the time.

    RIP Dan.

I was actually at the race in Las vegas, I follow indycar or anything with wheels really and always liked the underdog and he was 2 time indy 500 champion starting at back of the grind for a $5million jackpot share with a fan,,what a tragic loss, well maybe he is in a better place, the race was total carnage to see in real life, we had to wait 2 hours before they announced it at the track and then the 5 lap salute,,they played o danny boy followed by amazing grace,,it was so so sad..life can be cruel at times..may he rest in peace and my thoughts are with his family.

Very sad alright, just shows, even with all of the safety in todays sport, deaths still happen. RIP
