Who do you think's going to get it?

I reckon it'll be Rolland. Bilingual and a great ref. Second final in a row for him if he gets it which would be a great achievement.

    Other Potentials:

Owens - he's a bit of a homer. Reckon he'd be out for revenge too, was piss poor in the Samoa match IMO.

Barnes - O'Brien would never let that happen surely?

Joubert - Probably a two horse race between him and Rolland.

Walsh - Make it nice and easy for NZ. It could potentially be him though because he's from the ARU...

Anyway, who do you think it'll be?

wouldnt surprise me to see Nigel Owens - a nice home time referee for the occasion like last week v Argentina

Saturday's controversy may have a bearing on Rolland getting it, unfortuantely. When's it decided?

It's Joubert , with Owens and Rolland.

IRB have officially confirmed Joubert will ref the final with Rolland and Owens as the assistant referees.

Barnes will ref the 3rd place playoff with Poite and Clancy as the assistant referees.

The fact that message boards like this and planet rugby have threads about who will ref a game are indicative of how much influence or perceived influence these guys have. Wales now hate rolllaind, Samoa hate Owens, NZ hate barnes etc. They should bring in video reffing for more decisions. Expand the TMO's remit

Surely it would be argued this would slow the game down a great deal? Would it not? I agree with you, the tech is there and it needs to be relied on like its supposed to be, but I think even seemingly insignificant calls will be found and contested by fans no matter what. Refs will never be out of the firing range.

Where is Joubert from? Sounds French.

Well if the ref is about to give a card, he could go to TMO to double check since it has a fairly heavy influence on the game.

That way everyone knows a card is on the table and if TMO disagrees, we know a bad decision has been avoided and if he confirms it, we have the correct outcome.

Usually some crap happens during a carding offense so the game is slowed down anyway.

Rollands had a pretty bad year, regardless of his performance last weekend. His performance in the NZ v. SA game in the tri nations was particularly awful. Hopefully he'll be back to his best in future.

    Joubert is a good choice.

I'm very surprised they went for Joubert. I don't think he's overly bad or good, he's a solid enough referee but he's very young at 33. I thought the play off game was between himself and Barnes. He has made a couple of iffy calls in the world cup with the refusal to give Russia a yellow card in our game being the most odd. I would have had my money on Kaplan as the most experienced referee in the game.

I never liked Joubert back in his humble Currie cup days but he has grown on me.
Lawrence should have been at this world cup instead of Kaplan.

Lawrence is at the WC. He reffed the QF between Australia and SA.

If I was to select a couple of referees that don't deserve to be there, Kaplan would be well down the list. George Clancy and Dave Pearson, for example, regularly have shockers and make atrocious calls. Lawrence himself made a complete balls of the QF generally with his attitude to the breakdown. I think Steve Walsh is also a very lucky boy given his past rubbish.

Mark Lawrence. I was referring to South African refs.

Ah, fair enough. Mea culpa. Still wouldn't have Mark Lawrence in there either ahead of Kaplan or Joubert. He's never been particularly highly rated in the game; he has been available for three world cups and never reffed in any of them.

Its a pity. Because he is pretty highly rated in South Africa. Higher than Kaplan. He doesnt have Kaplans sexy white patch though :pac:

Kaplan is top ranked referee in South Africa by their union. Thats why they nominated him over Lawrence.
