Hi just wondering what would be considered a grade fault or lead to a possible fail in a driving test?

I have a possible list that could be possible grade faults or that could lead to a fail, correct me if I am wrong or if there are any other reasons for a fault or fail. What would be deemed as a fail straight away or just a fault?
    • Not using mirrors enough
    • Not using handbrake enough
    • Speed not up to recommended speed at speed zone
    • Stalling in particular at a junction, in traffic or at a roundabout or reversing or pulling out
    • Not moving on when clear
    • Stopping on yellow box junction when in traffic
    • Passing a red light
    • Not keeping within the line such as too close to the white line
    • Swinging wide when taking a turn
    • Not looking at blind-spot
    • Not using correct mirrors when changing lanes or taking a turn
    • Using the wrong gear for situation/speed or being rough with gears
    • Accidently going into the wrong gear when changing up and down gears
    • Not looking at mirrors when taking a turn/changing lanes/stopping/before pulling out
    • Not getting into reverse gear properly
    • Bumping kerb
    • Being too far out from kerb
    • Crossing over white line when taking turn
    • Not giving enough room or time to overtake a moving or stationary vehicle on the road or street
    • Not speeding enough when overtaking
    • If on a road and street but having to pull in if not doing so on time to let a car pass while car(s) obstruct(s) your side of road
    • Rolling back on a hill
    • When reversing and not having car straight afterwards
    • If not stopping at a line /stop sign or yield sign in good time
    • If stopping too soon before a white line stop sign yield sign
    • edging out at a line or junction
    • wrong lane position
    • wrong stop position at a junction
    • not letting a car pass or allowing too many cars to overtake
    • not pulling out in 1st gear by accidently getting into wrong gear or forgetting to get to 1st gear after stopping
    • jerking or shuddering the car
    • forgetting that car is running or forgetting car has stalled
    • forgetting to pull up handbrake when pulling out
    • not anticipating or observing enough
    • not being able to deal with situations
    • going into a panic
    • continuous stalling
    • gibing wrong signal
    • not giving enough time with signals
    • rolling back
    • Not complying with signs
    • Taking too long to do turnabout
    • Coasting
    • Revving or racing engine
    • Steering wrongly
    • Cause an obstruction
    • Parking badly
    • Not staying left of road
    • Not going left of centre of road just before making a right turn
    • Not giving room for other cars to pass when making a turn
    • Cutting corners
    • Poor judgement
    • Being over cautious
    • Over doing it with the mirrors
    • Not locking wheel or not doing so enough when steering right or left to get tail of car left or right when turning or reversing
    • Not giving cars right of way

    Thanks in advance

That is quite some list

I wouldn't try and overthink, just know the basics - e.g. 9 Grade 2's or more, 4 Grade 2's on one line or 6 in one section = fail. One Grade 3 or more = fail, and Grade 1's don't directly affect your test result.

You can see the driving test marking sheet here - this is exactly what the tester will have in front of him as you drive.

And for plenty of food for thought, have a look at the RSA Marking Guide. There's not that many exams where you can see the marking scheme before you take it :)

    +1

I wouldn't go over thinking all the possible fails. I'd be making sure i was doing everything right in my lessons and taking it from there. A good instructor will be able to tell you whether you're ready for the test or not. Thinking about all the possible things that could go wrong wont help things.

Thanks a million for the information everyone. Great to know. Just wondered about the whole grade 2 faults that 9 of them be enough to fail you?

I have a tendency to over think things when driving. I do try to plan ahead my driving of what to expect how to do it and do it right. Sometimes I just make the odd silly mistake.

Ya, I would trust my driving instructor enough to know when I be ready for the test, I know myself when that time comes but hopefully be within the next few months as my 2nd learners permit runs out next summer. Have only gone back doing lessons again for the past three months and thank goodness there is a great improvement since I got back into it again after three years of stopping and starting and taking breaks and back again with the driving. So fingers crossed these be my last set of lessons and last instructor before my test. Found him very good. Best one out of three! So very happy with him that I have learnt a lot more from him and picked up things better with a decent steady improvement. So getting there with the driving at least.

I have had ten lessons with him so far, booked a block of lessons for the remaining lessons so hopefully after them I might do a pre-test or mock test to see if I am ready enough to do the test and pass it first time! Then just do pre-test lessons and another mock test before the real test.

Have driven the roads that be part of the routes for the test so hopefully with practice and knowing what the do and with enough skills to deal with those roads, situations and test I be well on my way to getting rid of my 'L' plates, have them too long a this stage! Just need to tweak a few things with the driving and then hopefully reach my goal!
