I am a permanent Public Sector employee and i have been in my current job(public sector) for 6 years on secondment to different dept. and recently found out (indirectly) that the person i replaced is coming back to her old job (ie: the one i have been doing for the last 6 years).
WHen i got the position i was given a letter advising that i would in this post for 18 months - i have never received any other correspondance from HR since but stayed in the job. A few years ago i asked my boss if i could be made permanent in this position - he agreed and as far as i know has been acting on my behalf with HR Manager. He's always assured me that i would stay put and assured me also that the delay in me being made permanent was due to cuts in the Sector and poor Managment in HR. I am due to go on maternity leave in March and have heard that the person i replaced is coming back in April.
I love my job and the obvious added bonus is the salary- just bought a house and would struggle fancially if i went back to my previous job
AS i said i have heard this information second hand and intend to talk to my boss tomorrow but was wondering of anybody had been in similar position before or knew if legally could NOT be moved after this amount of time.
    Much appreciated

What does it say in you're contract with regards to you're position?

i wasn't given a seperate contract when i received this new post - I just received two letters
    !
    1) dated April 05 / Grade 5 - Fixed 18 month
In this it stated i was successful in application from an initial period of 18 months - salary etc would be higher from date ....
    2) DAted April
Advising again the my salary would be higher 'for the duration of the secondment'

I have never received any further correspondance from HR about further extension of secondment.

I'd suggest thinking of it as more about negotiation than fighting: you're likely to be in a very murky employment law / HR-fcuk-up ground.

If you take a "fighting" approach, you may lose.

If you take a "opportunities" approach, you may find that managers are more inclined to help you find a mutually suitable solution.

And Theres YOUR kicker;) No offense here but women who are pregnant or going on maternity leave are pretty much the company's kryptonite! No company or a very stupid company would lay off a preganet women, its a walking mine field:eek: would cost them alot of money and headaches.
