    Hi all,

So, the breaks on my car have been squeaking for a while now and when I got my last service the mechanic said I'd need new pads soon, just wanted to get a rough Idea on how long break pads should last I've 48,000Km on the car, got it 2nd hand, its an 06 1.4 Citroen C4, So does it sound like its due a change? I'm not sure if the last owner got them done at all...

Depends on driving style, 30,000 miles wouldn't be unusual for requiring pads. Not hard to find out if they are needed really.

Fronts are defiantly squeaking anyway, thats a sign that they need to be changed right? I don't want to have worn breaks coming up to winter thats why I'm trying to figure this out now

    Ish.
Not necessarily, it's not a major job, realistically you need to drop it into a garage or get someone with a clue to have a look.

How long is a piece of string. There are too many variables to tell how long brake pads will last. Some people could get 100k and others 5k.

If there squeaking then they most definitely need to be looked at ASAP. They are the 2nd most important safety feature on your car, tyres are 1st, and any strange noises from that region need urgent action.

Well its booked in to get them changed on thursday, getting the parts myself and getting charged €50 for labour, I just want to make sure that I'm not going and getting them changed when I've no need at all

No one here can tell you if they are needed or not from this thread :)

its a cheap job so why delay? the mechanic said it would need doing soon and now they are squeaking.... just do it.

Its a half hour job you could easily do yourself with basic skills and tools.

PS if its been squeaking for any length of time , you might need new discs as well.....

better off haven them sorted if you leave them to long you could end up with having to get new brake discs aswell. they are pricey you can get new brake pads for about 25 euro if you know a person handy enough with cars tell him there is 30 euro if he fits them, takes less then half an hour simple spanner is all thats need. does mine myself neved a problem

if your trying it yourself youtube a video on fitting them :)

i dont think you even need a spanner do you? Pull off the spring clips, pull out the pins, pull out the pads....push the pistons back into the caliper a bit, fit the new pads, put in the pins, put in the spring clips...might vary on different cars I spose.

Only a very small proportion of cars on the road have the type of caliper your describing these days.

Yep, 2 spanners are generally needed on a lot of cars. One to hold the pin and the other to undo the bolt.
Just my opinion but I wouldn't recommend people going near their brakes, tbh, unless they know what they're doing.

As an aside..I used to get about a month/6k miles out of a set of front pads back when I was driving for a living. :o:eek:

    6k miles to a set?
Where were you driving that you could get through them that quickly?

The vehicle was loaded to the b*llox and driving was mostly stop/start. Killed the brakes in no time ,(along with a few gearboxes).

I sent a set of front pads to the bin in less then 200 kms once!!

Fitted them on a saturday, went to Mondello on a Monday, they went on fire twice(while burning all the paint off the calipers:mad:), changed them tuesday morning!

Cheap brand pads don't work well on track!:P

The amount of people I've had beside me in traffic telling me I need to change my brake pads because they squeek an unholy amount  Educate yourselves when I tell you I don't need them and then explain why

In any case it's usually a grinding noise that says that the backplates of the pads are chewing up the disks.

What have you got the RC6s in? Seems like they might be nice in the Exige nest time I need pads.

It's a play on words... the stop is so quick the "A" doesn't get pronunced the last "D" is the thud of you body off the dash. I'll get me coat...

Can you use copper grease on them or is the noise from the front of the pad? I wouldn't be able to drive with the racket

Copper grease quietens it a bit, but not much and the grease just burns off with some spirited braking anyway
