And Freeview is NOT the same as Saorview!

A freeview HD tuner will get Saorview channels though (although EPG functionality could be hit or miss)

Would it not be cheaper to just get a Saorview set top box and us the PVR function to record onto a USB stick or hard drive. The cost about 50 quid. and a USB stick or hard drive are fairly cheap online?

If you need to back up any recordings to DVD you can use your existing DVD recorder but plugging it into the scart or component connections?

I do this all the time as I've an uncle living in USA, he wanted to get the Galway GAA games and some of Ms Brown's Boys programs etc on DVD posted over to him.

The logo on the Recorder itself says 'Freeview' so it's not gonna work on Saorview at least.

If you are looking at any of the English stuff for use with Saorview, it MUST he be 'Freeview HD'

There will never be a DVD recorder for Saorview as video DVDs (rather than PC files on a DVD) don’t support MPEG4 or HD. Digital recorders work by simply recording the “off air” signal without change, a perfect digital copy. This means that playback is same quality as live and there are no quality or Long play settings as there are with VHS, S-VHS and analogue input DVD recorders.

    Nonsense

Every DVD Recorder Ive seen (Incl my own LG which has a UK "Freeview" tuner) can record at different speeds. Therefore the recorder is obviously decoding and reencoding the MPEG data stream. If a DVD recorder were to DIRECTLY transfer the MPEG data from DVB-T to DVD It would be difficult/impossible for the user to determine the available recording time since different channels use different (and sometimes dynamically variable) data rates.

(some) HDD only PVR's employ the direct digital recording techniques you describe. The downside being there being no (simple) way to achive these recordings to DVD (other than faffing around with SCART feeds and dubbing in real time or going down the media centre route)
