Maybe download iOS 5 and do a restore on iTunes?

That's bizarre. Try reset network settings. Also have a look in settings/restrictions.

you sure they weren't moved, go to settings>general>reset and reset home screen layout to get them back

For a restore, you must use your Mac and iTunes. It's quick and painless. Or you could do erase all settings and data - a total reset - on the phone itself.

I wouldn't go quiet that far. Its a massive file to download.

There's no need to redownload. The install file is stored in library/mobile backups and simply re-installs from there, when a dedicated restore is chosen. That's why you have to click on alt+restore when you wish to navigate to a beta of iOS, for example.

Same thing happened to me. Phone restarted after the update and my apps were gone.

I went to the App Store on the phone and clicked on the Updates tab, then clicked Purchased, then All. All the apps were there, with the little icloud symbol beside them; I then clicked on each icloud icon individually and it loaded them all up one by one. A bit slow, but at least you can choose which apps to install and in what order.

That is quite true but I think the OP is remarking on the phenomenon of his default apps disappearing and irretrievable from AppStore -which apparently has itself disappeared -something I haven't heard of before.
