I use VLC but it keeps crashing since ios5. It was going to happen sooner or later as it was pulled from the App store and no longer updated.

What are the best alternative video players for playing AVI files on the ipad ?

Obviously free is preferable but I don't mind paying for a quality player.

I really like OPlayer. Haven't found anything that it has refused to play so far. Theres a free version but it has an ad banner. Still you could get a feel for it with the free version and upgrade if you like it.

The best one that I've come across has to be It's Playing. Handles everything I've thrown at it so far (AVI, MP4, FLV, MOV, MKV).

Got it playing a 720p MKV perfectly on an iPad 2, tried a 1080p one but was far too glitchy to watch. So anything other than a 1080p MKV should work perfectly.

Good player is a great one, I've had no problem with it so far anyway and seems to play most video files.

    I replaced VLC with FlexPlayer

It's free and has none of the sync issues VLC demonstrated

Anyone know if this player works with iPad 1 playing .mkv files ?

OP: Oplayer lite is free and will play xvid and divx avi files perfectly. Oplayer is cheap enough and doesn't have adverts.

    Its player Sounds very interesting.

It seems to work for ipad 1 tallus. I looked it up in the app store and it just says "ipad (OS4 or later)" .

Installed it this evening on my iPad 1. It's a tad laggy though, looks like I'll have to start saving for an ipad 2 heh.

+1 on Oplayer, plus you can view remote shares with it.

Does it play on files including Avi out to an apple tv?

    Airvideo will do that.

I'm using CineXPlayer at the moment and have to say that I like it. Only extra I'd like would be the ability to create folders and organise the files. IE. Different TV shows would have their own folder etc

No - purchased it and tried it there - same as VLC , does not go to apple tv unless you use mirroring.

Works better than VLC and GPlayer but downside is needs a client pc running to access the content on it or a NAS mapped through it - best so far though.

Can you view off a NAS directly and then play on apple tv2 ? or have you to turn on mirroring on the ipad? Plays avi's?

Ah. When I got it it was free. Last night, I got Ace Player -again for free, which seems well featured. Need to try them both with ATV.

    You can do that:
Just click on Edit in the top left corner, then select New in the window that comes up. You can call the new folder the name of the programme.
Then hit done and go back to the main screen with all your programmes.
When you hold down the thumbnail of the programme you want to move to the folder there is an option to move and you just select the folder you want to move it to.
You can also link files in the same folder so you can watch episodes back to back without having to open each one.

Just synced a movie to it, watching full sound and vision in superb quality on my 46" with Apple TV.

iOS 5 on tv and iPad? Had you to use iPad mirroring to get it onto the tv or could you just select airplay on iPad and then use iPad for surfing / apps while movie was playing?
Was the movie an Avi? Thanks

Try buzzplayer hd. Supports FTP samba upnp shares and airvideo. Plays everything i've thrown at it. Surprised no one has mentioned it. Also works with AirPlay.

Great - thanks a million. Is there any way to bulk move videos. I'm putting around 150 cartoons on it for my little one and it'll be a killer to have to move each one

Also a smashing feature would be to play random videos: ie. go through all views in all folders and play them in random order
