Taxing a used car

Bought a new car in September that hasn't been taxed since February. I only just got the logbook so can I fill out RF100A and pay 1 month arrears and the 12 month fee? Does the Certificate of Roadworthiness or Pass statement issued by authorised tester where appropriate apply to private cars?

Really don't want to queue up in Nutgrove!

You need to declare that you're the new owner, and get the period until you became the registered owner signed off by the gardai so you don't have to pay arrears for it. Once you've done that you can tax it for 12 months starting in the month that it states you became the registered owner.

You don't have to put in anything into the certificate of roadworthiness section. You do need to fill in a policy number into the insurance bit though.

You will have to do it in the motor tax office this time, from then on you can do it online.

Would I need to call into the office? I have bought a good few used cars and always filled out the form and went into the office. Never got it signed by a garda though. I'm hoping I could just post the form in?

you can post it all off and you dont need to visit the Gards as the period before you owned it is nothing to do with you. You wait til you get the taxbook back and then pay from the first of the month in which you declare you bought it . Simples.

Thanks corktina. Have it filled out and in the post. Much quicker than going to the office!

What if I have bought a new car and it has been off the road for 2 months will I have to get RF100A stamped by the gardai?

You are liable for tax from the beginning of the month in which you bought the car.
So if car was off the road during August and September, and you bought it in October, then you pay tax from begining of October.
If you Bought car in August, and didn't use it for 2 months, then you have to declare car was off the road in August and September, and tax it from begining of October.

    That's all wrong.

    2. You don't need to get anything signed by gardai, if you started using car straight away after you bought it, no matter how long tax was out before.
Once you've done that you can tax it for 12 months starting in the month that it states you became the registered owner.

You can tax it for 12 months from current month.
If car was bought in previous month (or earlier) and not taxed yet, you have to declare it was off the road and get it signed by garda, or pay arrears.

Nope, you can tax it straight away at your local Motor Tax office while you wait for the docs to come back. Registration documents are not required when it comes to paying tax.

    So?
He still doesn't need the registration docs. He can post off the RF100A and the disc will be send to whatever address he puts on the form so it won't go to the registered owner on file.

Enter the name and address of the person in whose name the vehicle is to be licensed.

I still need the transfer to be competed before I can tax it via post according to the tax office.

really? I don't think it likely that the disc would be sent to someone not registered as the owner due to the fraudulent possiblilites that throws up. The form you link to seems to say DO NOT use this form in these circumstances.

Any one know roughly how long it takes to process a postal application for motor tax?

Never mind. Just saw the money has been taken from my account. Posted in the Forum on Monday so was pretty quick!
