What is Detroit house?

Before someone gives me the 'it's all just music" lecture, note that I too am sick of genre tags and buzz words.

Nonetheless, with people like Theo Parrish and Delano Smith referring to this Detroit sound, I thought I'd get a working definition of it.

The tracks I've heard so far certainly have their own flavour, but they reference funk, soul & disco rather than electro/techno.

So I guess it's Motown Detroit we're talking about here...

Well knowing and loving Detroit techno etc, this is what I imagine it is, in any case its a classic, it says house a lot, what more could you ask for?
