I think I like my best friend...

I say "I think" but really I know that I like him. I've known it for a while now. A couple of years at least. I am a guy by the way.

I don't know what to do about it. He is definitely straight because he has a girlfriend for a while now. I think about him a lot. Each time I think about him I get depressed because I know it can never happen between us. It feels terrible. Please say I'm not alone...

Because we're good friends, I see him a lot. Each time I see him it gets tougher and tougher. I can't and don't want to just stop being friends with him because of this.

What can I do? It is actually affecting my day to day life. I just feel so down about it. How do you stop having feelings for your best friend?

    Thanks for listening.

    uh oh!

Well I mean, as you say, he is straight and he has a girlfriend, so he's definitely off bounds for the moment at least. Does he know you're gay?

I would suggest you try to spend less time with him and more time trying to find a boyfriend. That's the only thing I can think of that won't lead to disaster and more pain down the road.

Now that doesn't mean you can't still be best friends with him, just less best friends, if that makes any sense. You need to try and forget about him a little bit and concentrate on meeting someone who can fulfill your needs.

Treat it as though you would treat any break up or case of unrequited love, except not to the extent that you would actually cut ties with your best friend.

But you're definitely not alone. I, for one, have had a few crushes on straight guys I know, and I'm not even out yet. Personally I just tried forgetting about them or we just drifted apart and then all those feelings went away.

I for one know exactly where you're coming from . I've had the whole best friend experience .

It doesn't end until you either as killer said - be less best friends with him for a while or try find a bf of your own .
Definitely don't try anything with him because he is out of bounds

Experienced the same situation myself and to be honest I found trying to get over him more difficult than coming out. While it depends on your relationship with your friend, I found the only way through the mire was to tell him - we've been far closer friends since.

I've had friends who had an 'if you were gay' chat. Women certainly have no issues with 'if you were straight' conversations.

It depends on the dynamic between you and your friend

    I've been there too...

Liked him for easily 7 years.

It happens. Best thing you can do is to distance yourself with him. I made the mistake of frikkin living with him for 2 years in college so don't do that!

I told him that I liked him aswell. He took it well and didn't really mind. Didn't make it weird at all but it might in your case.

Been there, done that (fooled around a bit) and it made things very awkward! We're kinda getting back to where we were 2 years later. I distanced myself from him and while it hurt for a while it made things a lot easier. Plus he seems happy with his girlfriend! Moral of the story occupy yourself with a boyfriend ;)

Yeah I could have lived with him, but decided not to, as much as I wanted to.

So the only solution is to become less friends (which basically means dont like him as much, which doesnt really help!) or find a boyfriend, which is as difficult as liking him less because I'd have to find someone better than him so to speak...

    Unfortunately, yes.

No ones said it was easy but it kinda has to be done.
