I'm thinking of starting saxophone, and I've on musical experience other than playing recorder in school. Is it a hard instrument to learn? I'd really like to go for a trial lesson on a sax before I actually buy one though, so does anyone know of anywhere that does lessons that would let you borrow or rent a saxophone?? Thanks for any advice

Are you looking to play alto or tenor? I'd start on alto.

I played for 7 years. It's a lovely instrument and requires practice and hard work like everything else (obviously). I didn't think it was too hard, but I came from the flute. Sorry, I don't have any place to recommend, but I wish you luck!

You would never learn enough in your first lesson to decide if the sax is for you or not. If your not into buying one and want to give it a try the best I can suggest is to go to Paul Ryan Instruments and rent one from him.
At least going in and having a chat with the man is worth your time. He is a genuine honest broker and wont send you astray!
A great instrument to learn, have fun :-)

    And the bit about renting:

When buying a decent sax in Dublin you have 4 options really.

    Paul Ryan...as mentioned above.

    Educational Music Services http://www.emsmusic.ie/

    Mccullough pigott http://joelynchmusic.com/

Buy second hand or from Thomann. I got two clarinets from Thomann and saved myself about €700 between the two of them. The main con is that you cant try them out before you buy but if you have a sax in mind that you'd like to buy try that.

Another online place to try is http://www.sax.co.uk/. They have a great selection of saxes there. i have bought lots of mouthpieces, reeds, cases etc from them and they ship incredibly fast. Last time I placed an order I received it 24 hours later.

One instrument to avoid is the Trevor James sax. I've had nothing but problems with students using these saxes. I'd recommend any Yamaha or Yanigisawa or if you're looking for something cheaper go for a Jupiter. How much are you looking to spend?
