obviously he thought he was getting a good deal..............but the new vehicle registration cert had him fooled........................after it happened i saw a passat on donedeal for 6950 then next day it was 6500 so got someone to call seller and he knew very little about the car ,my suspicions raised i told the gardai but they did not follow it up

    Sickener!
Haven't heard of that one in the past. Is there anything you can do at the motor tax office like get a new clean reg for the car considering the circumstances?? I'm sure the Gardai would like to get to the bottom of this too.

Personally I would cover the plates in an ad, and never meet a buyer at my house -both tactics would draw much stick from posters on this forum, but i'd rather play it safe than sorry.

indeed, there was one poster in the past few days taking the piss out of people who cover reg plates in ad`s,
it seems all to easy to attempt to clone a car here,

Blanking the plates wouldn't have saved you from this as they clearly just went for the same type and colour of car as the one they had nicked, although it is generally a good idea.

Blanking them would save you from less advanced cloning, but if they swiped the disks, they would have just read the reg then.

i had one of my scooters cloned in the same fashion, didnt know till the guards called around wondering why they had taken my scooter from the scene of a chase,"sorry guard thats mine there in the garden"

I always blank them, you don't know what kind of mentalists are on boards and who like to turn up on your door step ;)

The following is a salutary lesson about the importance of covering plates in ads.

A regular poster in this forum had his car on a site for sale - registration plates were not covered.
A guy rang him about the car , a dispute arose over the phone ( dunno the background to it ) and seller told the caller to F...off.

Fast forward a few days or weeks and the seller found he was being stalked by this guy ( full details escape me but perhaps someone else may remember the full story ).
It transpired this weirdo had got someone in Shannon to run the plates and come up with an address.
We would like to think this is rare but given the very poor record of State Agencies in the area of data protection ( I include the Gardai in this ) my view is that you can never be too careful about keeping the plates hidden , remember this stalking/harrassment was by someone who had never even seen the car.

Even if you blanked them it only takes a phonecall to get them so it's not that much of a deterrent:
"Hi, saw the ad for the car, do ya mind me asking what the reg is for a motorcheck(or other) report? if it all checks out I'd love to come see it"

I'd much rather meet the person face to face before giving any details out. At least you know what they look like, and what they turned up in.
That said if things were getting desperate financially for me and i really needed to sell the car i might change my outlook.
