Hey lads, a friend of mine has a great german pointer bitch and dog. They had a litter of pups around june last year and by all accounts are doing great. I love my deer stalking, pigeon decoying and i want to get back into the phesant and duck shooting. Problem is i dont have a gundog at the moment and i live in a terrace house and only have room to get one dog. I can teach a dog to fetch and thats about it. My question to you lads is would it be possible to train a dog to point phesant, retrieve duck and pigeon and track wounded deer. Would i be better to train him/her to one type of hunting because it wold be to much hard work? . Wont have the pup until after xmas hopefully. Thanks lads.

To be honest you can teach a dog that has a brain just about anything. if you introduce them early then what you want can be done.
On a side note some pointers can bark a lot which might not suit your terrace house neighbours.

Everbody has self doubt when they start training a dog for the first time, don't be worried. Don't be afraid of making mistakes, i am into springers so dont know what books are available for the hpr group but other posters will help out.
If you have the time you will be fine mate for all you know you could become very good at training dogs, with the books and dvd's and the info on this forum most people will do a fine job of training their first dog.

Basically don't panic, read up and if you have doubt the dog will feel this and good luck!

Pointers will bark a lot. A GWP or GSP would be suitable for the shooting you describe but I wouldn't have any dog you are going to use for game or duck shooting be used for pigeon shooting, it can make them hardmouthed or put them off retrieving.

If you want to train it to deer and game, best thing is to train it to deer first, and dont let it near game of couple of years till it's rocksteady on deer.

Not being smart but please use correct English as the abbreviations/text speak is frustrating and hard to understand.
