DMF to SMF conversion.

    Afternoon all.

I'm getting slightly ahead of myself here, but just looking for advice essentially.

I'm driving a 06 Octavia with 158,000km on the car, still on original clutch and flywheel.

It's been remapped recently, so I know that's gonna shorten the remaining lifespan, and not completely loving the idea of €700 for the clutch/ DMF kit.

Has anybody on here done the conversion to an SMF, and if so how successful was it? And what negatives, if any, did the conversion have?

    As always, all replies appreciated.

Guy over on the briskoda forum had his dmf fail at 35k miles and had it replaced under warranty by Skoda who incidently converted it to single flywheel.
    He says
Had mine done under warranty at 35K and it was converted by Skoda to SMF with a new clutch too.Totally different car to drive now.Ultra smooth and quiet and much more responsive

I'll have a look on there, along with vagdrivers.

My question is why do modern cars use DMFs when SMFs were never really that bad when it came to smoothness of gear change/vibration feedback.

And from what I'm reading elsewhere ;) , opinions seem to be mixed on doing the conversion, which is to be expected really I suppose.

Nothing wrong with clutch/ flywheel at the minute. No rattle/ vibration or clutch slip. As I said originally, just getting advice ahead of the event.

Who makes the Solid flywheel kits? I know valeo do a good range, but who else? LUK don't, but I heard they are looking into making the, Sachs are in the same boat as LUK.

I'm incredibly confused. You've gotten that life out of the current clutch & flywheel, whats to say you wont then get the same life again after you change them both? & if you switch to a single flywheel at the next clutch change, you'll still have the expense of that flywheel obviously, but you'll be saving on another flywheel change the next clutch change on again......in 5/6 years time! Your worried about trying to save yourself €300 in 5 or 6 years time?

It's not so much that, it's more to do with the remap. I'm quite probably showing my ignorance here, but I would have thought that an SMF would be much better able to handle the extra torque that I'm getting. I could well be wrong though.

And who's to say that because I've gotten as long as I have out of the existing clutch/ flywheel, that I would get the same from an exact replacement. Although the same could be said If I used a conversion kit.

Essentially I'm looking to see if any key had done it, and their experiences afterwards.

But where's the fun in that???;)

Tend not to drive her hard though, cos the young lad gives out, or hangs me with the missus. :(

I know a lad who put a conversion kit on an Avensis, he said it has a vibration in it since.

When I was putting a flywheel into my Golf (150) I asked around and was told there had been some problems including a broken crank. My old one had over 100k on it at that stage so went with the DMF again.

I had heard of similar problems with Mondeos myself. Like a said initially, not totally loving the prospect of paying a grand to have the clutch/ DMF fitted. But if it's the correct/ best option, then it's the one I'll choose.
