Car tax up for renewal, car will be off the road

Car tax up for renewal in November, and i'm heading away for 3 months in November so obviously not going to re-new until I return next February.

Question is, do I do as was done traditionally, say nothing, and just go into the Guards upon my return? Or have things changed where you now declare a car off the road for x period of time?

    Cheers

My vote is do nothing, it'll only be in December that your non-taxing will be flagged to them and they will send you out a form asking you to declare the car sold/offtheroad/scrapped. By you not returning the form they will notify the Gardai as a matter of course that you have not taxed your car and the Gardai will file that under 'yeah whateva!'

That notification to the Gardai is fairly outdated isnt it? in that the thinking would have been that the boys in blue would take a spin past your house to see if the car wasnt on the drive. What with modern apartments complexes with private carparks, that option isn't really open to them anymore.

It wouldn't do any harm to inform the police. They were checking cars on my road for valid road tax. Unless it's parked in your driveway, I think it would be wise to inform them if it's on a public road.

if its on a public road it needs to be taxed so make sure its not or you could be done

Isn't it illegal to park an untaxed car on a public road? OP would face a fine regardless of him telling the gaurds in advance.

OP, don't bother going to the gaurds now, they won't be interested. When the time comes to tax it again just go down and get a stamp.

I agree bar but are we differentiating between a public road/street and a road in a housing estate. The gardai here would never come into our estate or any in our village and start looking at windscreens, that would not be good for relations.

Some Gardaí cars have ANPR now, once a car is flagged for no tax it'll ping on the system if the squad cars drives by it. If it's parked on a public road you can get done.

Can will be off the road locked in a shed.

Was just wondering if there was no a pre-notice system where you could inform council/guards it was off the road (like in the UK). Cheers i'll just lock her up and get the oul schtamp when I get back

You have no other option, thats the way its done in this country.
Just make sure its not parked on a public road (this includes roads in private estates etc), and its on your driveway/private property.

I'm open to correction on this but AFAIK it's OK not to have tax in a private estate. As the roads in a private estate are private property, just try getting someone to deal with an abandoned vehicle and you'll soon find.

There's a difference between road traffic offences, which can be prosecuted in any place the public have access, and what's essentially a tax to use the public roads. If the council don't maintain the roads of a private estate then you don't need Motor tax to be on them.

Funny you mentioned it, as there is a little trick about it.

Legislation requires cars used (and parked) on public roads to be taxed.
Roads in most estates are public place, but are not a public roads.
So according to legislation, no need for the vehicles to be taxed.

But if you don't use your car for few months, and then you want to tax it again, you need to fill in an "non use declaration" where you have to declare, that car was not used (or parked) in "public place".

So after leaving car in the estate, you are not braking any law, but if you want to tax it again then without paying arrears, you have to make false declaration.

I assume that's just a mistake, and if someone went to court with such thing, the case could be won, as there is no reason for motor tax offices, to force car owners to declare it wasn't used in public place, as according to legislation, it has to be taxed only when used on public roads.

Any station should do it for you, in my experience anyway.
