Multiple monitor issue

It finally occurred to me today to try plugging a second monitor into the VGA port on my PC (main monitor is on the DVI port), and presto! it shows up as a separate monitor on Ubuntu.

Unfortunately, if I configure for multiple screens, it goes horribly pearshaped. Performance gets manky - dragging a window happens at roughly 1fps, for example - although small updates seem to happen quickly enough.

If something affects the entire screen (say I hit the logo key to bring up the dashboard (running GNOME shell)) the whole screen is replaced by diagonal tearing, but as individual windows update, they re-paint properly, albeit slowly.

The GPU is an Intel 82Q35 integrated graphics controller. Maybe it just can't hack doing 3D full-screen on two displays?

    Any ideas?

    Bah. Solved my own issue.

The combined width of the displays exceeded 2048 pixels, which the GPU can't hack. I've rearranged the desktops so that one is above the other - it's not as intuitive, but it works.

Was that Ubuntu 11.04? I spent all day yesterday fixing assorted faults in Ubuntu 11.10. Canonical have done a nice job with Unity in Ubuntu 11.10 (at least they've with ATI, I haven't tried with one of my nvidia cards). It's not bad at all - it just might be good to switch from Kubuntu.

The issue was the same before and after an upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10.

I've never trusted OS upgrades since windoze 98.

Is that problem down to the amount of RAM you have assigned in the bios? You might be able to get the wider desktop if you bump it up.

I'll check that out, cheers Khannie.

The video RAM is maxed out already, but it seems to be a driver limitation: it can do a 4096x4096 virtual desktop, but once it goes over 2048x2048 it turns off direct rendering.
