Shared Dish Problem

I'm new here so hope this is the right place for this.

We currently have Sky in our rented apartment. It went down last Friday night and we've had no TV all week. It is a shared dish and the only option available in the complex.

Today we had an engineer out to have a look at it. Apparently there is something wrong with the wire that brings the feed in. He said the one in the bedroom is working fine and wants to bring the feed from the bedroom around the skirting boards into the sitting room. Does this sound right or should he replace the feed with no connection?

We were told Sky will not cover this and it'll be €75+VAT. I was wondering should Sky cover this cost as it's in warranty or should the landlord or even the management company cover it? I don't feel we should have to pay when it's due to no fault of our own there is no signal coming through the feed?

    Thanks

If the cable has broken externally, I'd suggest that it wasnt installed properly and it's up to the original installers to make good.

If it's an internal problem, then it's most likely down to you to sort out yourself...

Maybe use the old trick...tell Sky it's an external problem...that their own contractors didn't do the job properly and if they don't fix it you'll cancel your subscription... In fairness, fixing a cable isnt a big job....at most it might be a bit awkward to get to but that's about it....

I certainly wouldnt allow them to be running cable around your apartment....

    Thanks for the reply.

Well it's not broken internally from what I can gather. Was just told there is no signal coming through the cable and Sky won't cover it.

The cable in question is running down the back of the plasterboard so that's probably why they just want to run a cable from the other point in the bedroom?

Is the sky broken that can't receive the signal from their serves? You had better to get in touch with their own contractors as quickly as you can. If that's true, you don't have to pay anything.

Well the lads we've had out are in charge of Sky in our complex and I was just told they won't be doing the work, they'll be putting us in touch with an electrician.

The engineer sound like a proper moron. Running a feed from a bedroom that already has a run from the main room. Idiot.

If it went down then it was obviously working previously ? I presume you did mention this.

There are too ends to the cable - one in the normal comms room that serves the apartments in your block and the other in your apartment. If it easy to see whether that cable is pushing a signal from one end to the other. If thats okay its the distribution box that comes from the communal dish.

If as I suspect there is a separate satellite company looking after the maintenance of the dish systems, then it is their job to fix it under their maintenance contract. If it a Sky in Apartments crowd then it is their problem as that is the reason they are let in to provide Sky to X amount of customers and look after the maintenance as a result.

    Get on to your landlord.

Yes it was working previously and made sure to make a point that it went down by itself over night. It was working when we went to bed but no signal on the box when we got up.

We have to go through the letting agency so can take a while to get a response from our landlord. Should I ring Sky or even the company who manages the installations in our complex about this in the mean time and see what they have to say about it all?

I was just wondering can I use this to get out of contact with Sky?

This is the second time in less than two months we've been without service. Last time we were two weeks without TV. In week two this time too.

If you move and don't tell them your new address, they won't be able to contact you. :)
