My head is melted ! I nurse my xp along because I cant afford to replace it.
Problem is virtual memory. It started when I got a msg on start up telling me virtual memory was zero and the msg told me to go to control panel/system/advanced/performance/ change and I put in the new values of 5 or 700 mb and clicked save.
It then told me i would need to restart, which I did only to get the same message again ! I have tried everything several times and I have problems even running programmes because of lack of memory. I also tried to roll back to an earlier date using windows restore but all the restore points from this and last month are gone. I have about 2gb of free space on my main disc.

I am writing this in an Internet shop but can get replies to this on my phone.
Can anyone help please, I need it daily on my job hunt. Thanks

Basicly when all your RAM is used up Windows uses a portion of hard disk space for virtual memory. If this keeps going low well then you need to:
    * Check what is running on the pc at startup. Look here
    * Make sure you use a light anti virus program, also make sure you only have one anti virus program installed, any more than one and that is likely your issue
*Free up hard disk space. Even if it means getting a external HD/Large USB key move all non essential stuff from your XP hard disk to the external. Windows XP should really have around 8-10gig free always. It will work with less, but if you have low amount of physical RAM, it gets messy as you have noticed ;)

how big is your HDD , you want at least 10-15% free for optimum perfromance

use treesize or spacemonger to see what is taking up space

ccleaner will remove some unneeded crud

Yep free up your Hard Drive, nevermind you should have everything backed up on an external drive allready, so hardly would need say movies on the PC.
Turn off system restore as that can reserve HDspace or set a min value it can use, also Hibernate could reserve 1-2GB, so unless you use Hibernate just switch it off. Also clear your IE-temp folder, set it to 250mb or even set the IE Temp folder on a USB flash pen.

If you can increase the actual memory do as so many people have pc's that only have enough memory for the OS, at least XP is a great OS. How much real memory do you have?

some good advice there but just to add, check your task manager and pay attention to the memory field, you may have a process or processes eating up the memory(RAM).
