Good luck to him anyway, we need him on top form in London next summer. Looks like Steven Colvert will have a good chance of making the A-standard and join Hession there if he keeps progressing the way he has.

Does this make them training partners? Steven has been training with John for the past 2 years but since his move to DCU this year I am not sure whether he is still training under John. I would hope he is as it would benefit both athletes to have each other pushing each other on in training

Great to see top talents in the country training together as I think this will really help drive the sport if we can get elite training groups training together

I sincerely hope so, it would be great if they were training together in the run up to London. Barring injury, I have a good feeling that Colvert can make a big breakthrough in the 2012 season. Hession in 2011 showed some good form at times but lacked consistency so here's hoping that both come together for him in the coming season. Really excited now about Irish athletes in the run-up to London as many of them seem to be getting their acts together to give themselves the best chance of success. Mad Len making a bold move to Oregon, some of our younger athletes knocking on the door of A-standards, Rob Heffernan looking like he could do big things in the 50km walk, and so many others going in a positive direction. Cragg in Fukuoka marathon will be really interesting, who knows what he'll produce. Ok, I'm getting carried away here but who cares, why not have a positive rant about our sport for a change!!

Dont forget Helsinki also. It will be interesting to see how our top athletes approach the season do they play it safe and aim for softer than normal Euro Medals or go for broke with decent OG performances?

Helsinki will be a good opportunity for those athletes who are just outside the Olympic standards to chase those times/distances needed for qualification. However, I wouldn't want our top athletes to jeopardise a good showing at the Olympics by giving too much for the Euros. However, the athletes and coaches themselves will be able to weigh up the best option that suits them best so I'm not worried about this scenario. Btw, is there going to be a marathon at those champs or 50km walk for that matter? Surely no athlete with Olympic ambitions would be entered in those events.

    No Marathons or Walks.

The more I think of it would it not make sense for the likes of Derval, Gillick, Mad Len, Hession to do the Europeans as it would give them practice at running rounds in a championship environment, in the leadup to London. Surely better preparation than just running one off races in DL or IAAF World Challenge meets? Succeeding at the Olympics requires 3 good races, not 1, so Helsinki provides a chance to prepare for this.
