Surprised the kept the handbrake. Not impressed with the outside nose looks elongated too much, interior is nice through.

Most variants actually weigh less than there outgoing equivalents despite being larger.

I love the new looks, inside and out. I wonder what it's like to drive?

ed: Overhangs look v-short to me:

Nicer than current model, front looks strange side on. Looks like it crashed into something and has buckled.

Very nice. Beats the E9x models.
Nose is reminiscent of the old 'shark-nose' from the 80s.
I like the fact they called it the F30 too...bit of a reference to the timeless E30.
Wonder how the F30 M3 will bode?

It really isn't bad at all.

BMW have designed some horrible looking cars in the past couple of years, but I must say that this is a relief.

Profile looks terrible. Completely unbalanced. Lip on the top of the boot looks awful.

Line across the front of the bonnet ala Volvo looks terrible.

The merging of the lights with the double grille also looks awful.

Chris Bangle took a lot of abuse but his designs were better than the F series designs.

Audi and Merc must be laughing at this considering they aren't going for the quite frankly odd styling lines of BMW.

Chris Bangle took a lot of abuse but his designs were better than the F series designs.

The current guy who is head of BMW design is Adrian van Hooydonk, who is a protege of Bangle. He was the actual designer behind the E65 7 Series and the creator of the 'Bangle butt'.

It's strange that people have been wanting Bangle to come back after seeing cars launched even only a couple of months after he left. People don't understand that several designs released up to now were done under his watch and were still waiting in the wings between his departure and now.

It's a stupid thing to want Bangle back anyway. The argument that he improved BMW sales is nonsense, as it was purely the badge that sold cars like the 1 Series to people. Sure there was a need to move BMW design on and into the 21st century, but not to the extent that he did it.

Looks good but the biggest problem for the 3 is the 5. When a 520 can be had for little more than 40k the new 3 needs to be a lot cheaper to make any impression.

Considering BMW are now the #1 selling luxury brand in the world's biggest luxury car market, I'd say, no, merc and audi are not laughing.

The F series cars, IMO, look great.

I like it, interiors look great, that was always a letdown of the e90. Like all BMW's the car will be totally reliant on its alloys for appearance. Its not as much of a departure as the e46 3 series was to the e90 which is a shame but BMW have gone all conservative and soft these days.

No they are going for the ultra boring conservative line in saloons which try to be as good as the 3 series..somehow I don't think they are laughing given their current offerings.

The C Class is nice looking but is more expensive and not as nice to drive. The A4 is just plain boring.

I like the new 3 and think it looks miles better than the E90 both inside and out. If it's well priced (and even if it's not) it will outsell the other two by 2 to 1 Would be great if they dropped the 316 in both petrol and diesel though. Think they have done nothing but harm the brand (even if they make plenty of money off them)

The crease that goes through the door handles is at the wrong angle and to me, is the main reason why the profile shot looks plain wrong.

The crease should be at the same angle as the bottom of the windows. That would line it up nicely with the start of the bonnet. Front section back to A pillar also looks too small for the rest of the car.

On the plus side, the interior is very, very nice.

The A4 might look a bit boring, but they are literally everywhere and must be Audi's best selling A4 yet.

Got the new pricing through on Friday, but it doesn't look like it's generally available, so I'm not going to put it all up yet.

316d ES will cost you €120 more than the entry level A4. 316d is the only model to get the ES spec.
318d starts at SE spec. Sport and Modern spec are the same price with Luxury the highest specification.
320d Luxury comes in €70 above the entry level 5 Series.

320i versions are band A for emissions, and cheaper than the diesels, but I reckon they will still be few and far between. Manual is 0.2 seconds faster to 100km than the diesel at 7.3 seconds (auto's take the same time of 7.6 seconds).

328i Models are band C for emissions and 335i Models are band D. Nothing bigger than a 320d listed at the moment for the diesels - all diesels are showing as Band A, but may be subject to change (can't see it though if 320d is Band A confirmed). Lower emissions on Auto's throughout the range.

The fact that the 320d Luxury is more expensive than a 520d is crazy. i think the new 3 looks great but would you really want oone over a 520?

17" "star" spoke alloys look to be as standard in the uk, is the same here then?

Tbh, i don't think the 3 series is all that important in an Irish market context anymore, the 5 series is where its at, both for the badge snob's and everyone else. You could almost make a case that the entire A4/C-Class/3 series segment is gone due to the proper executive class becoming so much less expensive. Everone goes for the executive car even if the compact exec' is a more appropriate car for their needs.. I prefer the new 3 series to the 5 series too i think..

Where exactly does the "Modern" and "Sport" fit into things...

I see R.O.R mentioned that ES is available on the 316 and everything else is SE or higher.. does that mean that these new packages are like the Business Edition on the E90 or something?

So a petrol 335i coupe in 2013 with annual road tax of just €430?? Interesting...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,053 ✭✭✭Casati

ROR, can you say how much extra is the Modern or Sport versus the SE spec?

Isnt it gas, the offical launch talk speak is about three spec's Modern/ Sport and Luxury, and then we see ES and SE on the spec sheets- my experience is that these base spec's are what most people buy across Europe, (they are not just Paddy spec)

Having a band A 2.0 litre petrol that can do 7.1 to 100kmph is very interesting and I think it really will take sales back off the diesels- if tax was'nt so important to the Irish customer then 90% of new sales would not be limited to band A and band B. Fair play to BMW for taking another leap with engine efficiency, they always seem to be 1/2 years ahead of the other premium brands and 2/3 years ahead of the Fords/ Toyota's/ VW's

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,053 ✭✭✭Casati

Just looking at BMW.CO.UK, and its showing the CO2 of the petrols in band C- not band A, so it looks like we will only be seeing diesels 90% of the time. Surprised to see the 316d/318d power wasnt stepped up a bit

17" 5 Spoke Alloys look to be the standard on the SE. Irish specifications are usually identical to UK specifications, some models may be available in one but not the other though.

Moder/Sport is €1,410 over the SE. Luxury is €2,120 over those, so I'd hope you get a nice load more as standard for that price.

Now you mention it, the Road tax on the pricing I got says €104, but the fuel consumption isn't listed and the emissions are down as 147, so the road tax figure looks like a typo.

It does say that technical data hasn't been confirmed yet, so pricing could change.

The three different lines, the Modern, Luxury and Sport would provide a dilemma for me if I was in the market for one, as I'd want features from all sections.

11 slat chrome-lined grill and brushed chrome line on the air intake make the front end, so i'd want that from the Luxury. That cream interior with open-pore wood from the Modern is sensational so i'd want that. Don't like much from the Sport at all funnily enough, the exterior looks confusing and the interior black and red looks cheap to me. But i'd have the sport suspension and larger alloys. :)

No doubt you could just specify those on an SE, but it would undoubtedly cost you even more again :)

    From the Irish Times

    http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/motors/2011/10/14/new-3-series-boasts-low-emissions-and-lower-prices/
All engines in the new 3-Series feature BMW TwinPower turbo technology. They include a new four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol unit, developing 245hp and 350Nm of torque, in the 328i. It replaces the six-cylinder 3.0-litre engines in the previous 325i and 330i. Despite the drop in size, it still manages to be quicker from standing start to 100km/h, managing it in a time of 5.9 seconds, while emissions fall below 150g/km. The other petrol engine on offer is the 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit in the 335i.

Initial model variants (to be joined by 316d and 318d in March)
Price Power bhp Torque Nm 0 – 100km/h Seconds Combined Mpg CO2 Emissions g/km
    BMW 320d SE €38,170 184 380 7.5 (7.6) 62.8 (64.2) 120 (118)
    BMW 320d EfficientDynamics €38,170 163 380 8.0 (8.1) 68.9 (68.9) 109 (109)
    BMW 328i SE €42,590 245 350 5.9 (6.1) 44.1 (44.8) 149 (147)
    BMW 335i Modern €56,800 306 400 5.5 (5.5) 35.8 (39.2) 186 (169)
(Figures for automatic version in brackets)

You would like to think the new 328i will sell a few being only 4k more than 320d to get under 6s, the 335 doesn't look good value at all with 14k only getting you another .4s. Although of course you get the 6 pot too.
All models including ES (which is only available on 316d), will come with light alloy wheels (16-inch on 320d EfficientDynamics and 17-inch on the rest), automatic air-conditioning, Bluetooth, BMW Professional radio with 6.5-inch colour screen and iDrive, keyless starting, USB, a multi-function leather steering wheel, cruise control and automatic boot opening.

SE is available with all engines except the 335i, and adds, among other things, different alloy wheels, rear Park Distance Control, two-zone air conditioning and a rain sensor with automatic light activation.

Sport models feature slightly different exterior and interior design cues. Sport versions feature different light alloy wheels, black high-gloss air intakes in redesigned bumpers and matching bars in the double-kidney grille, and a black chrome tailpipe finisher. Red stitching adorns the sport seats and leather-rimmed sports steering wheel. The interior is in high-gloss black with a red finisher, the instrument cluster has red highlighting and there is extended and switchable interior lighting with exclusive colours, chrome rings around the climate and radio controls and ‘Sport’ insignia on the door entry sills. Sport also comes with an additional ‘Sport+’ mode on the Drive Performance Control and is available on all four-cylinder models except the 328i and 320d EfficientDynamics.

The new Modern specification features switchable interior lighting colours, the extended lighting package and matt chrome trim detailing and signature door sills. The standard seats are in part cloth and part leather, whilst there is a two-tone Oyster finish on the dash, with Dark Oyster on the instrument panel and multi-function leather steering wheel.

Luxury specification features 18-inch light alloy wheels as standard. Inside, the detailing is also chrome, while the upholstery is Dakota leather with an exclusive stitching pattern and the dash and door capping are in Anthracite wood with a Pearl Chrome finisher.

Finally M Sport versions will have lowered and stiffened sports suspension, unique aerodynamic body styling and ride on 18-inch M light alloy wheels and a shortened gearshift.

Spec looks pretty good on base models. Interesting that they are going to make xdrive available finally in rhd too.
