Equality =/= sameness (if that's a word)

    My favourite line of my mother's ever, when "feminism" Germaine Greer style was in vogue, and anyone who challenged it, from either sex, was a mysoginist/beaten down traitor, has got to be, "Of course, I'm capable of bringing in a bucket of coal, but I didn't raise four healthy boys to be doing that shyte. I prefer cooking."

    Herself and me sister, interestingly (or not) are both English teachers, with four boys.I wonder does this have anything to do with it.

    Either way, all eight of us, are pussy-whipped.:(

    Must talk to them about Animal Farm.:mad:

    So, having wrecked my own thread, how do the AHers of either sex feel about equality and sameness (i don't think similarity is the word I'm looking for in modern day context.)

    Choco.

    Also, I'm drunk.

    Sorry, bit drunk. The point/question is does a woman/man have to be looked down upon because they like doing stereotypical things?

    My Da would have been perfectly capable of cooking dinner/ giving us a bath/ doing the ironing, he just was happier cutting hedges/bringing in the coal/ bleeding radiators. Doesn't mean he was a male chauvinist pig, or my mother was a downtrodden female tied to the stove.

    :D No kidding

    Its equality under law and attitudes, but feminism is not anti feminine, a woman can still be feminine but her gender has to be respected, in that they are not just women, they are people, individuals with the same rights as us men.

    So we have physical attributes, they have other attributes, I like to think its those inequalities that balance to make us equal, but not sameness.

    People say women have come a long way and they have, but IMO not far enough, women in parts of this world are treated horrendously. So women and Germaine Greer keep up the fight, you have my 100% support.

    Men and women are different - physically, no question about it; mentally/emotionally - pretty much (in general)... so equality for me is simply not preventing someone doing something because of their gender, or indeed excusing them from particular behaviours because of their gender.
