Will a hard disk diagnostics test really take this long?

I'm running a Western Digital diagnostics tool on a USB hard drive. At 2TB, it is a big drive to be fair but after 4 hours running it says that the estimated time remaining is 2239 hours, or nearly 93 days. Is 4 hours enough time for it to average out the time-remaining estimate?

    Current Sector: 6697215 of 3907024895.

that sounds about right, given the amount of sectors already scanned along with the sectors remaining.

You've only scanned 1/583rd of all sectors. which took you 4 hours, so every hour you're scanning 1/2332.

Actually it doesn't seem right: it seems slow by about... 11 hours :)

It's probably hitting a number of bad sectors at the start of the drive, which are knocking out the average time per sector.

You might find that when it gets past a certain area, it flies along after that.

Not really, if the drive is really dieing the diagnostics will tell you before the final "crash" happens, so it will give you time to backup (if havn't already). A few hours of your time is better than paying a few grand to a data recovery company to recover it if your data is important :P
