UNIX GURU RIP

Pioneering computer scientist Dennis Ritchie has died after a long illness.
Mr Ritchie was one of the creators of the hugely influential Unix operating system and the equally pioneering C programming language.
A vast number of modern technologies depend on the work he and fellow programmers did on Unix and C in the early days of the computer revolution.
Those paying respects said he was a "titan" of the industry whose influence was largely unknown.

Just think how different the world would be without people like this.

Dennis Ritchie was a true pioneer. Don't get me wrong, jobs was very talented, but he didn't have anything on Ritchie. Hardcoding UNIX in assembly on a PDP-7. Don't get much more hardcore than that.

This site runs on FreeBSD, a derivative of 4.4BSD-Lite. The legacy lives on.

Before Ritchie, the thought of an interactive operating system, where you select the programs you want to run was space age stuff. Ritchie bridged the gap between punch-cards and what we have now.

What's all the fuss about ?
Based on this he's only responsible directly or indirectly for a significant part of the design of 9 of the top 10 most commonly used programming languages.

1 = Java
2 = C
3 = C++
4 = PHP <--- this is the only one in the top 6 that isn't a descendant of C.
5 = C#
6 = Objective C

Visual Basic is the only one in the top 10 that didn't inherit large chunks of syntax etc. from C.

*Java lost almost 1% of its popularity in September. If this trend continues, C will be number one again next month.
