Work mate was quoted 1200 to 1350 euros for engine repairs, and the final price comes back at 1800 euro for no extra work carried out and no valid reason, should he pay, I said No

The repairs may well have cost €1800, but that is no excuse not to ring first and check whether it's OK to go ahead.

All I know is, 00 Audi A4 tdi, head gasket replacement was quoted at 600 euro, 800 if it had to be pressure tested and skimmed, then it was recommended to replace cam shaft at 350 euro and was told there was no extra labour as the old one was out any way, so assuming the head was skimmed that comes in at 1350, its an independent garage, he got a quote for the work from VW of 1900 euro for the same work,with genuine parts, so went with the cheaper price, now the independent garage wants 1780 euro and prob not genuine parts

If he was quoted €1350 then that's what he should pay.

Was he told €1300 total or €1300 + vat?. That could account for some of the extra.

I seen the written quote before the work started 1200 to 1350 surely a quote would inc vat

Sounds like something you would watch on rogue traders on BBC.

Why did they replace the cam shaft ? I have never heard of cams on the way out ?

As for replacing the head gasket, I'm pretty sure most places include the skimming of head in the total charge as it's pretty stupid not to do it as you will more than likly end up with the same problem or oil pissing out. So they don't do it separate.

The head gasket itself is only about 50 euro so 550 in labour.

Sounds iffy if ye ask me.

Better again would be for the work mate to post here, rather than their friend who mightn't have the full story.

Right here is the update, there was no invoice for the work to go off, so we went last Monday and asked for one, which was greeted with hostility and the excuse of " I dont give invoices, never have done". Legally he is entitled to one I said and no more money will be paid until one is given, and we basically left. Then yesterday morning mate gets a call from garage to call round and did so, waiting was a new bill made out for 1350 euro. Make of it what you will
