a word of warning, always buy it in the packaging shown above, if it has a small white price sticker on it it's stuff off the counter that's just been handwrappped in cling film and doesn't keep for half as long. that applies to all supervalu meat, not just steak.

I actually prefer buying aged beef. I love going to Dunnes and buying the Aberdeen Angus Fillet steaks that are half price because they have gone brown. People in this country wont buy beef unless its bright red. Their loss is my SIGNIFICANT gain.

Shhhhhh! don't tell them! More for the rest of us....
That Angus steak is nummmy- doesn't need tenderizing or even marinading - plain and simple, little bit of garlic or herb butter, veg or two on the plate so it adds some colour and doesn't look like you have eyes only for the steak.....

People don't know how beef is supposed to look anymore.

If it's bright red and bloody then it hasn't been hung for any significant length of time and will have no flavour compared to a well matured brown piece of beef.

there's a big difference between being hung or dry aged, and being improperly packaged

tesco have a good deal for 2 small/medium striploin steaks (330g total size) for €6. they are pretty good. offer seems to be always there whenever I'm in over the last few months.

I think tesco meat is muck, and the steak is generally dreadful.

I bought that Super Valu steak before and it wasn't the May West, I have to say.

I completely agree, the bright red meat that's available in these boxy plastic packages in most supermarkets isn't generally isn't hung or aged for any significant time.

That steak above almost looks like a piece of rump rather than sirloin? Have seen my local supervalue trying to pull that one before.
If the meat is that red, its been hung for a week at the most.

Aldi steaks do it for me... I was in Supervalue in Swords earlier and didn't see any half price offers..

+1 for Aldi's aged Angus beef.

So simple to cook, I follow Jedi Master Jamie's method.

I always stock up on this when it comes up on offer, our local supervalu has great meat in general. We've have killed our own conventional and organic cattle and we always enjoy what we get there. I'll get a few bigger bits as well that can be slow roasted.

I was never a big fan of steak but Aldi has converted me, and now I can't get enough of the stuff. Delicious.

the striploin in this deal is ok (says it's aged 21 days) and if you know how to cook a steak properly it makes a big difference. ;)

supervalue also had a deal a few weeks ago for 2 organic ribeye steaks for €9 - they were very good. vacuum packed too.

I was referring solely to Tesco. SuerValu usually do good steaks :)

Supervalue here in Wexford source their beef from a local farm (Sleedagh Farm) and I have to say anytime I buy it it's always top notch.

I prefer their Striploin over the Sirloin as the former is always cut thicker but I wouldn't turn me nose up at a bit of Sirloin either.

I bought a couple of those Striploins for €6 in Tesco a few weeks back but really found them to be quite poor.. cut too thin and not the best of flavour at all.

Cant beat the Aldi steaks but there a little expensive. Most of the steaks you get in supermarkets are complete muck.

Just to note, it says on the shelf that the offer is only valid until tomorrow.

Wouldnt want people to miss out :D

supermarket steaks are awful,i find supervalue pretty bad a tesco are rubbish, the local sheehans butchers down by me are really good, usually get a piece of chump thats bloody massive easily get two people out of it and its normally 5-6 euro for it and its divine super tender and really juicy and tasty.

we get the supervalue striploin sometimes when its on offer and even tho its a "better" cut its not half as nice as the butchers chump

    Probably because chump is lamb

chump steak is just a different "cheaper" cut of beef

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,300 ✭✭✭CiaranC

Never heard of beef chump steak, there you go. Two steaks for 5 euro doesnt exactly scream quality meat

well seeing as the butchers slaughter and hang all there own meat and properly age it unlike a supervalue crap it is proper quality very little fat streaking trough it

By the way you've worded that, not quite sure what you mean.

Quality beef will often be well marbled through with fat, giving flavour to the cut. Wagyu beef would be an example of this.

Whelans Butchers in Clonmel are crossbreeding Angus x Wagyu to produce meat with a lot of flavour but not quite so high a fat content, possibly producing Kobe-like beef as a result.

They're Rick Steins favourite butcher btw, worth a visit.

I bought a few packs for tomorrows dinner.
I havent bought beef in a long time because I always used to end up with shoe leather on he plate and would wear my jaws out from chewing it.

Whats the best way to cook this so its soft?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,003 ✭✭✭✭mailburner

bought a load of these today
pretty good steak but i only use it for dishes like
beef massaman, stir fries, pies and the likes
biteen tough to eat as a normal steak unless tenderised or marinated

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,032 ✭✭✭jpb1974

I cooked myself one of these on the griddle pan this evening with a load of caramelised onions and boy did it hit the mark... cooked perfectly, tender ,juicy and great taste.
