Solicitor Bill, 4 years later!

I received a bill from a solicitor that i had dealings with when i bought my house 4 years ago. As far as i was concerned i had paid all of my bills with the solicitor 4 years previously. I thought that it was an error on the solicitor's behalf. So i contact the solicitor and he said i owed him x amount and under no uncertain terms he would receive said money. Now i have no problems paying my bills, the amount is not a large amount in comparison to what i had paid him. I m not sure what to do next, the solicitor was more that abrupt and extremely rude, any advice would be much appreciated.

Ask for a staement setting out his fees and setting out the payments you have made to him. Possible that a payment you made was not recorded.
Given that 4 years has elapsed I would think you are entitled to an explanation.

I am going to try that, but when i spoke to him he was less than pleasant to deal with. I am more than annoyed with this solicitor, if i owe him money, then fine, but i hope he knows it will take me 4 years to pay him back!!!

Send him a post dated cheque for 4 years time.

    Karma is restored!

When i spoke to him, he thinks that he sent me a cheque for x amount and now he wants x amount back, fine, no problem, but it is his error and it is four years later, as far as i was concerned i had paid my bill. If i have to pay him i plan in paying in 1 cent coins!!

Tell him you will need documentary evidence that
    1. He sent you the cheque
    2. You cashed the cheque
    3. An explanation as to why he made such a mistake
